Columbia Gambling Probe Leads to $1.3 Million Seizure, 13 Arrests

Authorities in Columbia, Tennessee, seized more than $1.3 million in cash and 144 gambling machines after a weeks-long investigation into alleged illegal gambling operations across the city.

The Aug. 25 operation involved more than 20 search warrants at businesses and two homes. Thirteen people were arrested.

The investigation began in July after Columbia police and the mayor’s office received complaints from residents and business owners about suspected illegal gambling. Investigators then conducted undercover visits at 50 businesses across the city.

They identified 20 locations that police said were operating gambling machines and paying out winnings.

The case grew beyond gambling.

Investigators reported seeing payouts involving minors, including children believed to be as young as 9 or 10. They also identified what they described as increased drug activity at some of the locations.

Two homes — one in Columbia and another in Gallatin — were identified as suspected storage points for money connected to the gambling operations.

Millions in cash and gambling machines recovered

The searches produced $1,328,269 in cash, along with more than 100 pounds of kratom and THCA.

Police also removed 144 gambling machines from the locations targeted in the operation.

The scale of the seizures points to an investigation that went well beyond isolated gambling activity. Authorities spent weeks documenting the businesses before moving to coordinated searches.

The operation brought together Columbia police with departments from Gallatin and Portland, the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the 22nd Judicial District Drug Task Force, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the IRS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Columbia officials described the investigation as lengthy and involving multiple levels of law enforcement. The police department said its investigators had spent weeks identifying the alleged illegal activity before the warrants were executed.

The mayor and city manager also praised the agencies involved and expressed confidence that the cases would move forward through the criminal justice system.

But the investigation is not over.

Authorities said additional indictments are expected. They have not released further details about the charges against those arrested or identified the businesses and individuals involved.

For now, the seizures provide the clearest picture of the operation’s scale: 144 gambling machines, more than $1.3 million in cash, drugs and 13 arrests arising from an investigation that began with complaints from people living and working in Columbia.
