According to NielsenIQ’s latest survey, published in the report “Bets on the Table, Consumption at Stake”, 26.3% of Brazilian households have already participated in at least one form of betting in 2025. The document reveals the increasing relevance of this practice in the budgets of Brazilian households.
In total, 49% of these households believe that betting is a means of increasing their income. According to Gabriel Fagundes, Industry Insights Leader at NielsenIQ: “We already knew that betting is a popular and common practice in the routine of Brazilian consumers. Now, the numbers also show us the extent to which this practice is taking in terms of household spending and income from bets.”
Budget Trade-Offs and Consumption Shifts
While only 10% of households confess to having reduced essential expenses due to betting practices, the effects are already visible in these cases. Among these households, 47% point to food expenditure as the area of impact, while 45.3% highlight fixed expenses such as services.
In general terms, households are responding to these pressures by reducing the quantity of their purchases; in total, 60% of categories show a reduction in quantity. This demonstrates the direct competition between betting and consumption patterns.
Formats and Player Profiles
Games such as Mega-Sena have the highest market participation in lottery games, 15.8%, while slot games such as the “Tiger Game” have 7.7% market participation. Sports betting and informal games have lower market participation.
Demographically, the slot game market is dominated by younger and middle-class consumers, while lottery games have higher market participation in the older and higher-income populations. In terms of regional market penetration, the Northeast and South regions have the highest market penetration of 29% and 28.3%, respectively.
The study also identifies the betting segment as casual, “Pro”, and “Elite”, and analyzes the behavior of the “Pro” and “Elite” segments. These segments have more behavioral changes compared to the casual segment.
Income Impact and Market Implications
The majority of the slot game consumers spend between 30 and 100 Brazilian Real monthly. This is up to 7% of their total income. On the contrary, lottery game consumers have lower spending patterns. More than half of the lottery game consumers spend up to 30 Brazilian Real monthly.
The discretionary segment of beer, biscuits, soft drinks, and perfumes is the most impacted segment in terms of market share in terms of household spending. On the contrary, the “cash and carry” segment is gaining importance as a retail format.
The betting segment is a new competitor in the market. This is a structural shift in the market. Therefore, the brands need to keep pace with the new changes in the market.
