Alberta’s Regulated iGaming Market Opens as Altenar, Pragmatic Play and Tonybet Expand into Province

13 July 2026 – Alberta’s regulated online gaming market has officially launched, marking a major milestone for Canada’s iGaming industry as suppliers and operators move quickly to establish their presence in the country’s second regulated online gaming province.

Among the companies announcing their entry into the newly regulated market are sportsbook technology provider Altenar, content supplier Pragmatic Play and international operator Tonybet, each highlighting Alberta as an important step in their North American expansion strategies.

The market opening follows Ontario’s regulated launch in 2022, creating new opportunities for licensed operators and suppliers while expanding Canada’s regulated online gaming landscape.

Companies Position for Alberta Launch

Altenar confirmed it has secured approval from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) and is ready to support licensed operators with its sportsbook technology.

The company said its scalable sportsbook platform, extensive customization capabilities and regulatory expertise are designed to help operators compete in Alberta’s evolving market while delivering engaging betting experiences.

Matthew Ferrara, Sales Manager at Altenar, said:

“The launch of Alberta’s regulated market is an important moment not only for the province but for the wider Canadian industry. Regulation creates opportunities for operators to build trusted brands while giving players access to safer, more transparent betting environments.

“We’re excited to support our partners as they enter this new market. Success in Alberta will depend on offering a premium player experience from the very beginning – fast, reliable technology, competitive betting content and the flexibility to adapt as the market evolves. Those are exactly the areas where Altenar delivers value, and we look forward to helping operators grow sustainably in one of North America’s most promising new jurisdictions.”

Pragmatic Play also announced its entry into Alberta, making its portfolio of slots and live casino products available in the province following certification. The supplier said its certified content includes recent slot releases Fury of Anubis and Big Bass Blast, the Gates of Olympus series, as well as its live casino portfolio featuring blackjack, baccarat, roulette and game shows.

Having already partnered with a number of tier-one brands in Ontario, Pragmatic Play said the Alberta launch strengthens its presence in Canada and supports its broader regulated market strategy.

Sharon McHugh, Director of PR at Pragmatic Play, said:

“Alberta represents an exciting new adventure for regulated iGaming in Canada, and Pragmatic Play is delighted to be among the first suppliers bringing premium entertainment to operators and their players from day one.

“Building on our strong momentum in Ontario, this expansion reinforces Pragmatic Play’s long-term commitment to the Canadian market. We look forward to working closely with partners across the province as the market continues to develop.”

Tonybet Receives Alberta Licence

Tonybet announced it has received an iGaming licence from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC), enabling the operator to enter the province’s regulated online gaming market.

Already licensed in Ontario and Kahnawake, the company said the new licence further expands its Canadian footprint. Tonybet also confirmed preparations are underway for its Alberta launch, including platform localisation, integration with the province’s centralized self-exclusion system and commercial onboarding with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC).

Dmitry Arabuli, CEO of Tonybet, said:

“Alberta is taking the right approach – building a regulated market that puts player protection and operational standards at the center from the start. That’s exactly the kind of environment we want to operate in. We’ve spent years proving in Ontario that you can grow a business and maintain the highest compliance standards at the same time – registrations and gross gaming revenue in the province both grew by 52% in 2025, with responsible gaming embedded in that success rather than working against it. Securing this license means we can bring the same commitment to Alberta, and we plan to be fully operational in the market,”

Alberta Marks Canada’s Second Regulated Province

The launch of Alberta’s regulated online gaming market establishes the province as Canada’s second competitive, multi-operator jurisdiction, creating new opportunities for operators and suppliers seeking growth within a regulated framework.

With companies including Altenar, Pragmatic Play and Tonybet announcing their entry on launch day, Alberta begins its regulated market with a growing ecosystem of technology providers, content suppliers and licensed operators preparing to serve players under the province’s new regulatory framework.
