X just flipped the script on its advertising policies. The platform recently removed cryptocurrency and gambling from its list of prohibited industries for paid promotions. This decision ends a ban that users lived with since June 2024. Consequently, influencers can now legally monetize their crypto content through direct partnerships.
However, X did not simply open the doors for everyone. While it welcomed crypto back, it added new items to the “no-fly” list. The platform now restricts promotions for meds, tobacco, weapons, and weight loss products. This strategic swap marks a massive shift in how the company views financial and health-related content.
A New Era of Disclosure
Crypto analyst DeFi Ignas first spotted these changes on February 16. He noticed the platform still listed crypto as prohibited earlier that same day. BeInCrypto later confirmed that the update took effect immediately. Furthermore, the policy change creates a clear line between formal X Ads and influencer partnerships. Restricted content on one channel might now find a home on the other.
To manage this, X rolled out a formal Paid Partnership framework. This system makes influencers label every compensated post with a visible “Paid Partnership” tag. Nikita Bier, the Head of Product at X, championed this transparency. He believes the feature will restore user trust. Similarly, it helps creators comply with strict FTC endorsement rules.
Accountability and Enforcement
Nikita Bier wants consumers to know when someone pays for a post. As a result, the social platform now puts the implication of compliance on the creators. Influencers must ensure their content follows all relevant local and international laws.
X also installed automated warnings to catch users who fail to disclose their deals. Repeated violations carry a heavy price, as the platform will suspend offending accounts. This dual system separates casual influencer shout-outs from the official X Ads program. It allows for more flexibility while maintaining a strict layer of accountability.
The Community Reacts
The crypto community offered a divided response to the news. Analyst Benjamin Cowen cautioned that many influencers must rethink their business models. They can no longer hide their financial ties to specific projects. Meanwhile, a user named Rune questioned whether X can truly distinguish between organic hype and paid shilling. He predicts a “massive ban wave” will soon hit Crypto Twitter.
Many people wonder if these tags will actually build trust or just clutter feeds. Regardless, the “Wild West” of social media finance just gained a new set of sheriffs.
