Virginia’s sports betting market found its stride again in August, bouncing back with stronger numbers across the board. Both revenue and player spending rose sharply compared to last year, while the state also enjoyed a healthy boost in tax contributions from betting activity.
Online Betting Powers the Market
Sports fans in the Old Dominion placed just over $510 million in wagers during August, the highest level of activity in months. That figure was up more than 22% from last year and nearly 19% higher than July, showing that the betting market is heating up as the fall sports calendar begins to ramp up.
Online platforms continue to dominate, accounting for almost the entire handle. Players bet $506.3 million through mobile and online sportsbooks, while retail betting inside casinos made up a comparatively small portion at just under $4 million.
The strong betting activity helped operators generate $58.3 million in adjusted gross revenue, a year-on-year rise of more than 66%. Month-on-month, revenue climbed almost 28%, showing momentum is clearly moving in the right direction. The state’s sportsbooks finished the month with a hold rate of 11.43%, which is above average compared to many other U.S. betting markets.
Payouts and Tax Benefits
While operators enjoyed strong revenue, bettors also saw plenty of winnings flow back their way. In total, sportsbooks returned $447.3 million to players in August. The online market once again carried the load, with nearly all of that payout—bar $2.9 million—coming from mobile platforms.
Virginia’s tax structure meant the state also benefitted from the busy betting month. Sportsbooks contributed $8.7 million in taxes, with the bulk ($8.5 million) directed to the state’s General Fund. A smaller, but important, share—just under $217,000—was allocated to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund, which helps fund responsible gambling initiatives and treatment programs.
A Growing Market with More to Come
August’s figures highlight just how significant online betting has become in Virginia. With 14 licensed mobile operators and three casinos taking wagers, competition remains fierce, but demand continues to grow. The combination of NFL preseason, Major League Baseball, and other summer sports likely contributed to the uptick in betting activity.
With football season now in full swing and more major sporting events on the horizon, the upward trend could very well continue into the autumn months. If August is any indication, Virginia’s sports betting market is entering one of its strongest periods since launch, with both players and the state reaping the rewards.
