President Donald Trump is expected to join a White House meeting on August 19 with executives from the cryptocurrency and prediction-market industries, adding presidential attention to a sector facing a growing fight over regulation and federal authority.
The meeting was first reported as a planned gathering for crypto and prediction-market officials, but Trump’s involvement was initially uncertain. Politico reported on August 13 that the White House was preparing for the Wednesday event, citing three people familiar with plans that had not been publicly announced.
That picture changed the following day.
Bloomberg reported that Trump was expected to attend, citing a person familiar with the event. Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Michael Selig was also expected to be there.
As of August 18, the White House had not released an official attendee list or confirmed Trump’s participation. An SEC spokesperson separately indicated that Chairman Paul Atkins would be at the White House.
The timing is notable. The meeting comes just one day before the CFTC’s Innovation Advisory Committee holds its first meeting in Washington, with prediction markets occupying a specific part of the agenda.
Prediction Markets Move Into the Regulatory Spotlight
The CFTC committee is scheduled to discuss prediction markets on August 20 from 3:05 p.m. to 3:55 p.m. Eastern time. The session follows discussions focused on cryptocurrency regulation and artificial intelligence.
The agenda goes well beyond the basic question of whether prediction markets should be allowed to operate. Members are expected to consider federal and state oversight, recent litigation and enforcement activity, the way prediction-market products are designed, market surveillance and protections for customers.
That mix reflects the legal and regulatory pressure surrounding the industry as platforms seek to expand the kinds of contracts they offer.
The committee itself is advisory. The CFTC says its recommendations are intended to inform the Commission, but its views do not necessarily represent the agency, its staff or the wider US government.
Still, the membership puts some of the biggest names in digital assets, financial markets and prediction trading around the same table.
The roster includes Kalshi chief executive Tarek Mansour and Polymarket chief executive Shayne Coplan, alongside FanDuel president Christian Genetski and DraftKings chief executive Jason Robins. Executives from Coinbase, Kraken, Robinhood, Crypto.com, CME Group and Nasdaq are also members.
That does not mean all of them will attend the White House meeting on August 19. Committee membership and attendance at the separate gathering are not the same thing.
The CFTC created the Innovation Advisory Committee under its new name on January 12, 2026, when Selig launched it as the successor to the Technology Advisory Committee. Its initial members were announced on February 12.
Its first formal meeting now lands immediately after a White House gathering in which the president is expected to participate.
For prediction-market operators, the sequence matters. Federal regulators are preparing to examine questions around jurisdiction, product design and customer protection while industry executives are being brought into discussions at the White House. Trump’s expected presence would give the meeting an added political dimension, even though the administration has yet to formally confirm it.
