Since officially assuming office on September 5th, Thailand’s new Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has made clear of his opposition to using gambling, particularly casinos, as a means to stimulate the nation’s economy. Speaking to local media, he firmly stated that those expecting economic growth through gambling would have to look to future leaders, as he personally rejects this approach.
Policy Reversal After the Previous Government’s Initiative
Anutin’s stance starkly contrasts with that of his predecessor, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, whose government coalition openly endorsed the legalization of casinos in order to establish integrated entertainment complexes. The move was set to draw investment worth up to $42 billion. Yet in July 2025, Thailand’s House of Representatives unanimously voted to pull back the Entertainment Complex Bill, effectively putting the policy of casino legalization into suspension.
Upholding Principles and Justice
In explaining his stance, Anutin referred to his prior role as interior minister, when he opposed the allowance of poker. He regretted that despite his resistance, the policy change went ahead after he left office. Summoning a reinstatement of “justice and righteousness,” the Prime Minister emphasized the need for reconciliation of government policies with ethical issues and national welfare.
Possible Reconsideration of Poker’s Legality
Apart from casinos, Anutin indicated the potential for reconsideration of the recent acknowledgment of poker as a sport by Thailand’s Sports Authority, which had opened doors to international games. The review points toward the rollback of gambling-linked reforms introduced earlier this year, indicating a wider tightening of the country’s gambling laws.
Fears of Affect on Tourism and Global Relations
Anutin has expressed concerns that the legalization of casinos would deeply suppress Chinese tourist visits, threatening a 90 percent drop. He mentioned sharp protests from Beijing and accusations that Chinese President Xi Jinping had strongly warned the Thai government not to continue with casino projects repeatedly. In Anutin’s account, defying these warnings could pose negative impacts to Thailand’s tourism industry, trade alliances, and foreign investment.
Steering a New Course for Economic Growth
The new Prime Minister’s rejection of gambling as an economic booster is a definite policy direction that tries to balance development goals with societal needs and international sensitivities. It is a move from gambling-expansionist policies to alternatives more in line with Anutin’s vision of Thailand’s future.
