Telecom and Internet Expansion Leads to Online Gambling Boom in Tanzania

Tanzania is witnessing remarkable growth in its digital economy, and the online gambling sector is one of the biggest winners.

According to the latest Communications Statistics Report from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), telecom subscriptions jumped by 7.1% to reach 99.3 million by the end of September 2025, up from 92.7 million in June.

Internet subscriptions have also experienced a rise of 4.1%, totaling 56.3 million, with mobile broadband representing over 99% of these connections.

This surge in connectivity is creating a favorable environment for online gambling, as more Tanzanians gain access to the internet and mobile services. The report stated, according to Citizen:

“This digital surge is further strengthened by mobile money adoption, which now reaches 71.7 million subscriptions, with over 5.27 billion transactions processed during the quarter.”

Supportive policy changes and technological advancements have led to an increased mobile money adoption rate. There has also been a 10% reduction in telecom fraud attempts, thanks to improved awareness and security measures, leading to a safe and accessible environment for online gambling platforms.

Over TZS260.21 billion generated in four years

Tanzania’s online gaming industry is flourishing, generating impressive revenue and attracting significant investments while creating thousands of jobs.

The Gaming Board of Tanzania has reported that the licensed gaming sector generated TZS260.21 billion (€96.37 million) over the past four years, nearly doubling the revenue from the previous period.

During this time, 62 licensed companies have collectively invested TZS66.7 billion (€23.1 million), introducing an impressive array of 8,549 betting games for Tanzanian players.

A noteworthy newcomer, Ithuba Tanzania Limited, launched in April 2025 with an investment of TZS54 billion (€18.2 million). This company has implemented transparent online draws, helping to build trust and attract a growing number of players to the market.

“The sector has created 30,000 jobs and contributed over TZS 922 billion (€318.5 million) in taxes, funding schools, roads, and sports programs,” stated Olesumayan Daniel, Acting Director General of the Gaming Board of Tanzania.

Focusing on responsible gaming and regulatory oversight

While acknowledging the industry’s rapid growth, officials in Tanzania are emphasizing that betting should primarily be a form of entertainment, promoting responsible gaming practices among players.

The Gaming Board’s efforts to crack down on unlicensed operators aim to protect minors and ensure fair play, while building sustainable growth within the industry.

As the country’s digital infrastructure continues to expand, along with mobile financial services and robust regulatory oversight, Tanzania is well-positioned to enhance its online gaming market.
