Success Universe Group Ltd has posted a net loss of just under HKD410.4 million, or US$52.4 million, in its financial results for the full year of 2025 compared to a profit of HKD93.4 million in the prior year. The Hong Kong-based investor in the Ponte 16 hotel complex in Macau has posted a loss after a significant impairment loss of just under HKD340.7 million because of the closure of Casino Ponte 16 on November 29 last year.
The closure is part of a policy change in Macau to remove the traditional satellite casino by the end of 2025. The casino operates under a license owned by SJM Resorts Ltd, a subsidiary of SJM Holdings Ltd. The closure has a direct impact on the partnership structure.
Satellite Casino Exit Hits Ponte 16
Success Universe is a joint venture partner in Ponte 16 alongside a unit of SJM Holdings. The property sits in Macau’s Inner Harbour district and has long been tied to the satellite casino model that was phased out across the city last year.
Most satellite casinos in Macau had been operating under the SJM group’s licence before the regulatory changes took effect. Apart from one venue, which has been acquired by SJM Holdings Ltd, all the satellite casinos shut down in 2025 as part of the policy change in Macau, which aims to eliminate the traditional satellite casino by the end of 2025. Success Universe Group indicated in its Monday announcement that the shutdown of the Casino Ponte 16 would likely have a significant negative effect on the business, but the company is committed to the investment in the project.
Focus Shifts to Non-Gaming Value
In the Monday announcement, the group indicated that the strategic focus of the Casino Ponte 16 would now be to maximize the value of the non-gaming assets, while the venue would continue to seek new hospitality options in the leisure entertainment segment in a bid to create value in the future.
This is a move brought about by the shutdown of the casino, which has affected the entire business model of the Casino Ponte 16. While the gaming component has been lost, Success Universe indicated that the property will continue to be developed around its non-gaming offering, with the aim of preserving value at the complex over the longer term.
Lower Investment Gains Add Pressure
The company’s weaker 2025 performance was not tied only to the casino closure. Success Universe also pointed to a substantial fall in fair value gain on its overseas listed equity securities, specifically shares in Tesla Inc. That gain dropped to HKD26.4 million at the end of 2025 from HKD89.2 million in 2024.
The combination of the impairment tied to Ponte 16 and the lower securities gains pushed the group into a loss for the year. The company did not recommend a final dividend for 2025. It had also not paid a final dividend for 2024, nor an interim dividend in either 2025 or 2024.
No Dividend as Transition Continues
The latest result leaves Success Universe adjusting to a business environment shaped by Macau’s casino restructuring and the end of the satellite model. With Ponte 16 now without its casino, the group is looking to non-gaming assets and new hospitality and leisure options to support the property’s future.
For now, the company remains committed to the project even as it absorbs the impact of the closure and the related impairment. The loss marks a sharp reversal from the previous year’s profit and reflects the pressure on groups linked to Macau’s satellite casino shutdowns.
