Sportsbooks Outspend Telecoms And Other Industries On Advertising In South Africa

There’s a new heavyweight on South Africa’s advertising scene. Many might assume it’s telecoms, fast food, or banking. But sports betting has emerged as a dominant force, with brands spending millions across various platforms.

In the 12 months before March 2025, gambling brands spent over R2.6 billion ($140 million) on advertising nationwide. This figure eclipses some of South Africa’s most traditional high-spending sectors, signalling a shift in the media economy.

Three top betting companies are leading the charge: Hollywoodbets, Betway, and World Sports Betting. According to Moneyweb, Hollywoodbets alone spent R775 million on advertising during the period. Betway followed with R342 million, and World Sports Betting also committed R140 million. Collectively, they accounted for R1.3 billion, over half of the total industry spend. This shows that South Africa’s sportsbooks are going all out to gain public attention and trust.

Digital-First Operators Set The Pace In Advertising

The increased advertising efforts were made by digital-first operators who understand where their audiences are and how they behave. Traditional players like Opulen with R400 million and Ithuba Holdings with R263 million also make the list, showing the gambling sector’s dominance.

Being a highly competitive industry, customers seek brands they can trust. Therefore, the sportsbooks understand that the game has shifted from acquisition to retaining and engaging players.

From industry sources, 35% and 50% of the total betting ad spend, which is up to R900 million went into digital advertising, including paid social media, programmatic display, and influencer marketing.

South Africa’s betting brands Seek A Lasting Connection

South Africa’s sports betting industry has become a marketing powerhouse, responsible for over 60% of all gambling ad spend in the country. The surge reflects a strategic pivot in how these brands connect with consumers.

Influencer campaigns are now commonplace as the sector aims to captivate players beyond social media interactions.

Critics Raise Concerns Amid Cost-of-Living Crisis

With the country’s cost-of-living crisis putting pressure on households, critics are raising concerns over what they see as irresponsible levels of gambling promotion.

The worry is that vulnerable communities might be lured into high-risk behavior by constant exposure to betting ads, especially those that position gambling as a quick to financial relief during hard times.

However, these issues haven’t slowed the momentum. South Africa is one of the continent’s most active markets, so betting brands hope to attract players to reach revenue targets in a competitive space.

Bigger Budgets And Smarter Campaigns Will Define The Future

As 2025 unfolds, it is clear that bigger budgets and smarter digital playbooks will continue to define South Africa’s sports betting ad landscape. Whether through interactive social media content or celebrity-driven campaigns, the goal is to engage a massive audience of potential bettors.

Though the competition is fierce, gambling companies have mastered the attention economy. With this level of reach, the gambling industry will drive higher figures in the future.
