The number of financial transactions on sports betting sites increased by more than 80% during the critical period of the 2025 Copa Libertadores da América, according to an unprecedented study released by Pay4Fun. The data analyzed includes the semifinals and the final of the tournament, offering a new perspective on the behavior of sports bettors before, during, and after critical football matches.
The survey results indicate that there is a focus of betting activity before the match, followed by a constant decline in transactions once the match starts. According to Pay4Fun, the rate of transactions weakens progressively during matches and continues to weaken after the final whistle.
Pre-Match Betting Dominates User Behavior
One of the most surprising results of the study is the number of financial transactions that take place before matches, which is the most critical period of betting activity. The number of deposits and withdrawals is at its peak before matches, which is a clear indicator that bettors prefer to bet before critical periods of matches rather than during matches.
In the final match of the tournament, which featured Palmeiras and Flamengo, the number of transactions before matches exceeded the average number of transactions during matches by 71.9%. This is a clear indicator that anticipation and strategic betting are critical factors in sports betting, especially during critical matches.
Once the match started, however, the number of transactions weakened considerably, with regular time transactions falling within a 1%-20.7% interval below the average. The weakening of transactions continued after the final whistle, with a 32.5% decline in post-match financial transactions.
Semifinals Show Consistent Transaction Patterns
The same phenomenon was also noticed during the semifinals. In the second leg game between Palmeiras and Liga Deportiva Universitaria (LDU), transactions prior to kickoff exceeded the average by a remarkable 83%. However, this activity gradually decreased as the game progressed.
In the first hour of play, transactions were 12.1% lower than the average. In the second half of the game, this trend intensified to a 25.5% decline. Once the game was over, transactions were significantly lower. They decreased by a remarkable 45.1%.
Flamengo Matches Reinforce the Trend
The same phenomenon was noticed in games featuring Flamengo. In their away semifinal against Racing Club in Argentina, transactions before kickoff exceeded the average by a remarkable 69%. As noticed in previous games, transactions significantly decreased once the game was over.
Insights Into Bettor Behavior
The study conducted by Pay4Fun consolidates a clear perception regarding seasonal and event-related betting behavior. The study confirms that a large number of transactions are made prior to kickoff rather than during game time. This phenomenon is especially noticeable in large tournaments such as the Copa Libertadores.
The study by Pay4Fun explains that by analyzing transactions, one may understand how large sporting events affect financial behavior on a betting platform.
