As online gambling continues to make waves in Africa, Tanzania has emerged as another hot spot with sports betting taking the lead in gaming activities.
According to the Tanzania iGaming Market Research Report 2025, sports betting forms the ‘bulk of the market’ with football standing out as the most popular sport among bettors, drawing significant interest in both local leagues and major international events. Other sports like basketball, tennis, and rugby are also gaining traction.
With sports betting accounting for 63% of all gaming activity, the report predicts that the sector will generate approximately $7.37 million this year, with steady growth expected at an annual rate of 9.02%. By 2030, the market could reach around $11.34 million.
Furthermore, the report anticipates that by the end of 2025, there will be about 39.5 million active players in Tanzania, representing 56% of the population. Notably, over 75% of these players will be aged between 18 and 34, with more than 60% under the age of 35.
eSports Showing Promising Signs
eSports is emerging as a vibrant segment within Tanzania’s growing gaming market, currently holding a 7% share alongside multiplayer games.
While sports betting leads the way, followed by online casino games at 20% and poker at 10%, eSports is catching up, particularly among the youth who are eager to engage with interactive gaming experiences.
Titles like Call of Duty Mobile and PUBG Mobile are especially popular, appealing to Tanzania’s mobile-first generation. This demographic is believed to be driving the growth of eSports.
Positive Future
There has also been a significant shift to online betting, with over 70% of all betting activities now happening online. This trend is largely fueled by the widespread adoption of mobile money and ongoing infrastructure improvements, such as the $150 million World Bank-funded Digital Tanzania initiative, which enhances internet access across the country.
Analysts predict that while sports betting will continue to dominate for a while, the potential for growth in online casinos, poker, and especially eSports remains strong. Tanzania’s young and tech-savvy population is slowly positioning it as one of the most dynamic iGaming markets in Africa.
