Sports betting activities in Portugal have registered growth in the third quarter of 2025, registering a cumulative gaming amount of €504.6 million. This is according to the gaming report provided by the Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service of Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ), and it represents a record gaming volume within a quarter for 2025.
In Q3, the firm posted a better result than the €483.4 million bet in the same quarter of 2024 and a recovery from a somewhat weaker second quarter of 2025.
Q3 2025 Marks the Strongest Quarter of the Year
During the period between July and September 2025, the amount of money that the Portuguese gambled on online sports betting stood at €504.6 million. This amount exceeded the €501.9 million posted during the first quarter and the €457.3 million posted during the second quarter.
As per data from SRIJ, this is the third quarter that has emerged as the strongest quarter within 2025, further evidencing the ability of the market to remain resilient despite various challenges that come with seasons as well as economic trends.
Long-Term Growth Trend Remains Intact
This third-quarter result also reinforces the positive trend seen over the course of the year in the online sports betting market in Portugal. Last year, Portugal recorded the largest betting volume ever in 2024. This indicates that betting levels have remained high.
It is worth noting that the bet of €504.6 million placed during the third quarter of 2025 is the fourth-largest quarterly record for Portugal. Only three other quarters broke record levels: the first quarter of 2024 (€573.9 million), the fourth quarter of 2024 (€533.7 million), and the third quarter of 2023 (€532.1 million).
The annual rate of growth is equally impressive. In 2024, the total amount of betting exceeded that of 2023 by €331.6 million. If it is considered in terms of the increase in the total amount of betting in 2024 in comparison to the total amount in 2022, it is more than €500 million.
Gross Gaming Revenue Declines Despite Higher Betting Volume
Despite the rise in bet volumes, the gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the third quarter of 2025 decreased. GGR stood at €99.7 million, lower than the €114.9 million recorded in Q1 and the €109.2 million recorded in Q2.
SRIJ drew attention to this disparity in betting amounts and revenues, to highlight how greater wagering activity is no guarantee of superior financial performance, especially in terms of sports results and customer participation.
Football Continues to Dominate Betting Preferences
Football, for the third consecutive quarter, accounted for the majority of sports betting in Portugal, at 71.8%. The sport was followed by tennis at 22.1%, while other sports accounted for 6.1%.
Looking at the market share of various football leagues in terms of the volume of betting done on them, the premier domestic league in Portugal had the highest market share of 11.4%, followed by the Champions League, which had a market share of 9.3%. In the tennis market, the US Open had the highest market share of 14.9%, followed by Wimbledon.
Taking everything into account, the third quarter of 2025 reinforces the fact that the sports betting market in Portugal is a mature, as well as growing, market with significant engagement, football-driven, and evolving revenue-based factors.
