SpaceX has taken decisive action by disabling more than 2,500 Starlink satellite internet devices being used by scam syndicates operating in Myanmar. This move comes amid growing concerns that the satellite internet technology has become a critical enabler for large-scale online fraud operations within the country’s regions affected by the conflict.
Targeting Scam Centers in Myanmar
Lauren Dreyer, SpaceX’s vice president of Starlink business operations, confirmed via a post on the social media platform X that the company had proactively identified and deactivated over 2,500 Starlink kits located near suspected scam centers in Myanmar. While the exact timing of the disconnections was not disclosed, the announcement follows investigations revealing the widespread deployment of these terminals in Myanmar’s border areas, where multiple sprawling compounds have been implicated in romance, investment, and cryptocurrency scams.
Use of Starlink Amid Regional Crackdowns
Following crackdowns by Thai authorities, which included a cross-border internet and power blockade earlier this year, many scam operations reportedly turned to Starlink’s satellite network to maintain connectivity. This shift was characterized by observable clusters of Starlink receivers prominently installed on the rooftops of such compounds. In spite of concerted efforts by local governments, such centers have remained and even thrived in the midst of the current civil strife after Myanmar’s 2021 military coup.
Military Raids and Continued Crackdowns
Myanmar’s armed forces recently declared the raid of a famous cyber scam center called KK Park, confiscating 30 Starlink devices in the course of the operation. However, independent analysis and investigative reports suggest the actual number of Starlink terminals in use within these compounds is far greater. Witnesses reported huge groups of people fleeing away from the region after the raid, highlighting the extent and frequency of such operations.
Implications and Broader Efforts
The action against Starlink equipment comes in response to more general efforts to shut down a network of transnational scam facilities radiating along Myanmar’s frontier areas.
