The Western Cape’s gambling sector has delivered strong returns in 2026, collecting R1.192 billion in tax between January and July.
Sports betting led the way, contributing R692.44 million of the total, supported by a turnover of R224.35 billion and gross gaming revenue of R10.66 billion. Casinos, horse racing, and limited payout machines (LPMs) made up the remaining R499.41 million, showing steady growth across all segments.
July alone brought in R174.1 million in gambling tax for the province, with sports betting again taking the largest share at R93.56 million.
Betting surge drives provincial revenue
Sports betting continues to dominate the Western Cape’s gambling landscape, accounting for more than half of all tax collected in the first seven months of 2026.
The sector’s turnover exceeded R224 billion, reflecting its growing popularity among local players. Horse racing followed with R217.68 million in tax and a turnover of R5.57 billion, while casinos contributed R211.89 million and LPMs R69.84 million.
July’s figures showed a notable rise in horse‑racing tax, up 27 percent from June to R38.67 million, alongside a gross gaming revenue increase to R644.50 million.
Casinos also maintained consistent performance, generating R1.47 billion in gross gaming revenue and R211.89 million in tax over the same period. LPMs, though smaller in scale, added nearly R70 million in tax from R506.65 million in revenue.
These figures underline the Western Cape’s position as one of South Africa’s most active gambling provinces.
