Slotegrator, a global iGaming software developer and aggregator, has published a detailed report highlighting Africa’s most promising betting markets. The company’s release explores how rapid digital growth, favourable regulations, and a young population are fueling the continent’s iGaming boom.
The report estimates that Africa’s gambling market will be worth $17.63 billion by 2025. It also forecasts a steady compound annual growth rate of 4.23 percent from 2025 to 2029. Thanks to increased mobile broadband access and local payment services, online and mobile platforms are leading the shift across the continent.
Football continues to dominate the landscape, with bettors across South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and other nations placing daily wagers on matches.
South Africa’s Sports Betting Surge
South Africa remains the largest betting market with its gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the 2023–24 financial year hitting ZAR 59.3 billion (about €3.07 billion), a 25.7 percent increase from the previous year.
Sports betting accounts for the largest share of this revenue, bringing in ZAR 35.91 billion. Online sports betting alone generated ZAR 28.97 billion, showing a clear preference for digital platforms. The South African market is also notable for its well-developed regulatory environment, making it attractive for local and foreign operators.
Nigeria’s Massive User Base
With a population of over 220 million, the Nigerian market offers sheer scale. An estimated 60 million people place bets daily, and the country’s gambling revenue is projected to reach $3.63 billion by the end of 2025.
Sports betting is the dominant segment, with football being the most popular choice. Operators continue to invest in mobile-first platforms to meet the demand of a largely youthful and tech-savvy population.
Kenya and Tanzania Show Strong Mobile Growth
According to Slotegrator’s data, Kenya leads in participation rates with 83.9% of adults having engaged in some form of gambling. Football betting is particularly strong, with 63.8% of players placing wagers on matches.
Furthermore, 88 percent of bettors use their phones to place bets, highlighting the mobile-first trend across other countries. With more than half betting at least once per week, Kenya is one of the top iGaming markets to watch.
In Tanzania, 71.13 percent of people surveyed reported betting activity, while 31 percent of them place wagers daily. The online sports betting sector is expected to generate $9.8 million in revenue in 2025, rising to nearly $15 million by 2029.
Smaller Markets Gaining Ground
Ghana and Uganda are also making progress. Ghana’s online gambling revenue is projected to reach $57.42 million by the end of 2024. The market is expected togrow at a rate of 5.16 percent annually through 2029.
Football is responsible for more than 76% of all bets in this country. About 70% of wagers are processed on mobile platforms, reflecting strong digital infrastructure.
Uganda is another nation that presents significant opportunities with a participation rate of 71.43%. In the first half of 2023, the total betting turnover reached USh 2.1 trillion, while they collected gaming taxes worth USh 151 billion over the same period.
What’s Driving Africa’s Betting Boom
Several factors are pushing Africa’s iGaming industry forward. Mobile connectivity has outpaced fixed broadband, making mobile betting the most accessible option. Regulatory bodies in countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are refining their frameworks to ensure fair play and consumer protection.
Furthermore, a growing middle class and higher disposable income contribute to the sector’s popularity. According to Slotegrator Sales Manager Ataur Abeer, success in Africa depends on local knowledge.
“Operators looking to enter these markets must tailor their strategies to local conditions. This includes investing in mobile-friendly platforms, ensuring compliance with country-specific regulations, and leveraging localized payment methods, ” he said.
In addition, localized payment solutions, especially mobile money platforms, are removing traditional barriers to entry. With the continent on track to become a global hotbed for betting, the time to act is now.
