SkyCity Sets Sights on Leading New Zealand’s Regulated Online Casino Shift

SkyCity Entertainment Group is preparing to be a major local player in the regulated online casino market in New Zealand as the country inches closer to the passage of its Online Casino Gambling Act. The company outlined its plans in a press release issued on a Monday, as it views the impending changes in online gaming as part of a larger shift in how people interact with and play casinos. For SkyCity, the aim is to be viewed as a reputable operator in this new environment, one that seeks to strike a balance between the growth of the market and the protection of players.

SkyCity’s Vision for Online Play

According to SkyCity’s CEO, Jason Walbridge, the gaming industry is undergoing rapid change, integrating the best of both online and offline worlds. However, his company will only move forward in this new world if it is done in a safety-first manner. If SkyCity does enter a regulated online market, it will be because of robust customer safeguards and SkyCity’s long-standing commitment to responsible gambling practices, with the aim of keeping the experience safe and enjoyable.

This stance places responsible gambling at the core of the group’s digital ambitions. Rather than operating online gaming as a distinct category, SkyCity integrates it with its current business and standards. The company’s message is clear: to be a leader in the online gaming industry is not merely about innovation and size, but about winning the trust of the public.

Details of the Online Casino Gambling Act

The Online Casino Gambling Act, which is being processed in the law-making system of New Zealand, will open the way for a tightly regulated online casino market. As per the proposal, a cumulative 15 licenses will be awarded through a three-step process, which will commence with the expression of interest, followed by an auction round for shortlisted applicants, and finally culminate with applications for the licenses. It is rather evident from the proposal that the lawmakers are attempting to control the industry.

The lawmakers are hoping to have the bill ready by early 2026, and the expressions of interest are set to begin in July, followed by an auction round in September. The processing of the full applications is set to begin in October, and the first online casino licenses are set to be awarded from December 1 of this year. For SkyCity and other interested parties, the coming months will be critical in determining their role in this new market.

Milestones at SkyCity Auckland

Walbridge’s views on online gaming were in the context of the anniversary of SkyCity Auckland. The company’s flagship casino opened its doors on February 2, 1996, and has since then welcomed over 100 million visitors. The anniversary highlights the company’s integration into the Auckland entertainment sector over the years, despite its current focus on online expansion.

Not only did the CEO focus on the anniversary celebration, but also on the upcoming opening of the New Zealand International Convention Center on February 11th. This new venue will provide another anchor for SkyCity Auckland in order to uphold its ability to keep visitors coming in while it expands its presence online, and should provide the catalyst needed for SkyCity to maintain its 5 million annual visitors.

Economic Hopes for Auckland and Beyond

The Economic Impact of the New Zealand International Convention Centre will be significant for New Zealand. In terms of Economics, it is anticipated that the convention centre will provide over 33,000 additional visitors annually. This influx of new visitors will generate over $90 million in new economic activity for New Zealand each year. The CEO mentioned the convention center as a landmark that could change the face of Auckland and New Zealand as destinations for international events.

As SkyCity seeks to balance its established physical business with a possible entry into regulated online casino gaming, the company offers both projects—the convention center and the online shift—as part of a larger shift. On one hand, there is a focus on bringing more people to Auckland through physical experiences; while there is a need to reach players through online platforms, within regulated parameters. How SkyCity chooses to navigate these dual tracks will help shape its future in the gaming landscape of New Zealand.
