30th October 2025 – Former England cricket legend Sir James Anderson has been shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award 2025, joining a lineup of celebrated authors and journalists competing for the prestigious £30,000 prize.
Anderson’s autobiography, Finding the Edge, co-written with musician and co-podcast host Felix White, is among seven titles contending for the 37th edition of the award.
The 2025 William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award shortlist is as follows:
- Finding the Edge by Sir James Anderson
- Ultra Women by Lily Canter and Emma Wilkinson
- States of Play by Miguel Delaney
- The Last Bell by Donald McRae
- Engulfed by James Montague
- Test Cricket by Tim Wigmore
- The Escape by Pippa York and David Walsh
The winner will be announced on 25th November at a central London ceremony, where shortlisted authors will each receive £3,000 and a leather-bound copy of their book, alongside the overall winner taking home the trophy and top prize.
The judging panel, chaired by Alyson Rudd, includes Clarke Carlisle, Gabby Logan, Elis James, Mark Lawson, Dame Heather Rabbatts, and Michelle Walder.
Commenting on the shortlist, Rudd said:
“This is a heavyweight shortlist where the dominant theme is power and the influence of the state over sport. Cricket is well represented, and all the books are exceptionally written. There is also a strong element of soul searching.”
She added that each title offers “bold and gripping narratives” that go beyond sport to explore deeper social and cultural themes.
The 2025 shortlist reaffirms the award’s reputation as one of the most respected honors in sports literature, celebrating storytelling that brings insight, reflection, and humanity to the world of sport.
