Racecourse Media Group’s (RMG) timing partner, CourseTrack, has announced a major restructuring of its board as it positions itself to meet increasing international demand for enhanced racing data and deeper performance analytics.
The award-winning in-race timing and positioning system has appointed Simon Bazalgette as Non-Executive Chair. He is joined on the board by newly appointed non-executive directors Nick Watts and Nick Horsfall. They will work alongside CourseTrack Managing Director Chris Murtagh, RMG Chief Financial Officer Tim Moss, and existing director Andrew Donald, RMG’s Head of Product.
Bazalgette brings extensive leadership experience across media, sport, hospitality, leisure, charity, and education sectors. A prominent figure within horseracing, he previously served as Chair of Jockey Club Racecourses from 2008 to 2019 and was the founding Executive Chairman of Racecourse Media Group in 2004. He currently chairs Spectacle Partners and GVS EQ.
Bazalgette said:
“CourseTrack has already transformed the quality and consistency of in‑race data across British and Irish racing. The opportunity now is to build on that success by continuing to deliver a robust, reliable service for our partners while evolving the technology and expanding into new territories. I’m delighted to support a business that is helping the sport innovate, grow and better engage fans around the world.
I’m looking forward to working with a strong board with amazing financial, technical and investment experience. Together, the aim is to develop a worldwide footprint for the CourseTrack service.”
Watts joins following a successful career in the investment sector, where he has held non-executive roles at LGIM and NewSmith, as well as chair positions with technology start-ups including Gojee and Biotics. Horsfall, meanwhile, is a senior executive within Gallagher’s Investment Consulting division. Both Watts and Horsfall were founding investors in Living Sports, a shareholder in CourseTrack.
Meanwhile, Dave Tharp, CourseTrack’s founding Managing Director, will continue his involvement as an advisor and shareholder in Living Sports after handing over MD responsibilities to Chris Murtagh, who previously served as Director of Operations since 2016.
Nick Mills, CEO of RMG, added:
“Strengthening the board with leaders of this calibre, positions the business perfectly for its next phase of growth under the stewardship of Simon Bazalgette. We’re delighted to support CourseTrack as it expands its footprint and continues to deliver world‑class data for our racecourses, partners and fans.”
CourseTrack’s technology currently operates across 60 racecourses in the UK and Ireland, delivering real-time in-race data via lightweight GPS trackers embedded within saddlecloths. The system provides key metrics such as race clock, leader speed, sectional times, and distance to finish to broadcasters including ITV, Racing TV, and RTÉ.
The data also supports in-running betting for bookmakers across the UK and Ireland, while powering RaceiQ, an analytics platform used across broadcast and digital channels. In addition, it contributes to wider industry functions such as handicapping and monitoring horse welfare.
CourseTrack’s real-time data is used in some of the sport’s most prestigious races, including the Randox Grand National, Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup, Betfred Derby, Juddmonte International, Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, and Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes.
The system utilises advanced RTK technology to achieve industry-leading accuracy, with tracking precision now reaching sub-10cm levels.
