The Campeonato Carioca Série C has been suspended by the Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation (FERJ) due to reports suggesting match manipulation in three matches played in the sixth round of the championship.
It became known that the decision to suspend the tournament has been made following the analysis of documents provided by the integrity monitoring companies operating together with FERJ and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). These reports have been issued by Sportradar and the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA).
Based on the analysis, unusual betting patterns and other factors associated with the game have been revealed for three matches played at the 2026 tournament. Such circumstances have been deemed sufficient for taking immediate measures to ensure the investigation of the allegations.
Three Matches Under Investigation
Matches flagged by the integrity providers are the following:
- Ceres FC vs Tigres do Brasil
- CAAC Brasil vs Itaboraí Profut
- Barra Mansa FC vs Mageense FC
As per FERJ, the fact that three different reports have been issued relating to the same round of the tournament suggests significant grounds to assume that the integrity of the tournament is under threat. In view of this, an investigation is required prior to resuming play.
Suspension has become effective as of the seventh round of the tournament. In other words, all sporting events will remain on hold until the conclusion of the investigation or until the sports judicial authorities make a decision based on the information provided.
Rise of Integrity Providers
It should be noted that the recent incident highlights the increasing role played by integrity monitoring systems in modern football. For instance, organizations like Sportradar and IBIA regularly track betting and match-related data in order to reveal any signs of irregularities.
This has become especially important with the growth of betting markets around the world. Through the use of their systems, integrity providers analyze vast amounts of betting transactions and match-related information. If unusual movements are noticed, it means that the relevant governing body requires additional attention.
It should be noted, however, that there is currently no final judgment concerning the situation. All the information provided by the companies in question serves as the basis for conducting an investigation, which aims to determine the nature of the irregularities and whether match manipulation occurred.
Documents to Be Sent to Authorities
According to FERJ, all documents connected with the aforementioned matches are planned to be sent to various authorities. In particular, they will be handed over to the Judiciary, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, police authorities, and the sports judiciary bodies.
“Considering that reports submitted by the integrity companies contracted by FERJ (Sportradar) and by the CBF (IBIA) identified abnormalities with a high degree of indicators suggesting match manipulation involving three matches of the 2026 State Professional Série C Championship, FERJ’s Competitions Department has determined the suspension of the competition until the matter is investigated and/or decided by the Sports Justice system“, reads the statement released by the FERJ.
“It is worth mentioning that all documents relating to the matches mentioned in the reports shall be sent to the Judiciary, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Police Authority, and the Sports Justice system.”
It remains to be seen what the future of the Campeonato Carioca Série C will look like after the conclusion of the investigations.
