Prime Sportsbook has initiated bankruptcy proceedings just ahead of a scheduled acquisition by its technology provider, Plannatech.
The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Jon Richards, informed SBC Americas that they are pursuing Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure their operations and manage expenses effectively before the impending sale to Plannatech USA.
Despite this move, Richards assured customers that there would be no disruptions to their betting experience on the platform during this transition period.
The operator aims to streamline its operations to facilitate a smoother sales process and maintain customer confidence as it navigates through this challenging phase.
“This industry appears to change on an hourly basis, and our goal is to continue operating within the licensed and regulated market while providing a fair product to the betting community,” added Richards. “We see this as the next step forward to providing a sharper betting experience for all bettors.”
New chapter for Prime Sportsbook
Prime Sportsbook, which made its debut in the US market in Ohio in September 2023, has quickly expanded its online sports betting operations to New Jersey in 2024 and, most recently, to Kentucky in July this year.
This week, the company informed users in these states about its voluntary bankruptcy pursuit through email communications.
As Prime navigates this transitional phase, Richards emphasized the importance of preserving the established Prime Sportsbook brand and maintaining existing relationships with state regulators. He expressed optimism about the reorganization, stating: “It’s a new chapter for Prime Sportsbook and it’s going to be a good one.”
Despite being a smaller player among well-known sportsbooks, Prime Sportsbook’s model targets sharp bettors, leading to intentionally thin margins. This approach has made the company particularly vulnerable to significant market changes, such as the recent tax increase in New Jersey to 19.75% on gross gaming revenue.
Additionally, the company’s leadership has seen changes, with former CEO Lee Terfloth departing in late 2024 for a new position at Delaware North, and co-founder Joe Brennan Jr. stepping down in February 2025.
As Prime works to stabilize and grow, the partnership with B2B tech provider Plannatech, which has its own operations in several states, could offer strategic support during this chapter.
