According to Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, there is a need to act in order to curb the problem of youth gambling, which is becoming increasingly worse and needs a tougher approach. Kim made this statement yesterday when he was giving remarks at an event where civilian members were being sworn in to serve in the National Gambling Control Commission.
Kim said youth gambling problems have been worsening recently and urged the newly appointed civilian members to devote their efforts to effective prevention. He also stressed the need to build a comprehensive safety net aimed at supporting the stable growth of young people, whom he described as the future resources of society.
Commission’s Role
In his remarks, Kim said the commission should act as a steadfast guardian to prevent society from falling into the trap of gambling. He added that, based on a sound gambling industry environment, the commission should also look at ways to support citizens’ leisure life, attract foreign tourists, create jobs and help revitalize regional economies.
The comments placed both prevention and broader industry management at the center of the commission’s role. While the immediate focus was on youth gambling, Kim linked the issue to the wider structure of the gambling sector and its possible contribution to the economy when managed properly.
His remarks were delivered in the context of the appointment ceremony, which brought civilian members into the National Gambling Control Commission. The event provided the setting for him to outline the responsibilities he expects the commission to take on.
Focus On Prevention
This was seen through Kim’s views on the issue, which indicated that there were fears about youth gambling that warranted action in terms of intervention at the early stages.
It is clear that by saying this, the prime minister was emphasizing the point that the commission’s functions should go beyond just enforcement and that it should be able to help in creating an environment where gambling could take place in a healthy manner while taking into consideration the economic contributions it made to society.
Broader Industry Outlook
In addition to his message on protecting young people against gambling addiction, Kim talked about the necessity of creating a conducive gambling industry environment. In this regard, he argued that if the industry was run properly, it would make a contribution towards leisure, tourism, employment, and local economic development. This constituted one of the messages addressed to the civilian commissioners as they began their work.
