The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) wants prediction markets to acknowledge their risks. The organization issued a formal resolution this week. They urge platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket to display the new national helpline prominently across their sites.
A New Number for a New Era
The specific request involves the recently launched helpline: 1-800-MY-RESET. On January 29, the NCPG presented this number. It functions similarly to the original 1-800-GAMBLER hotline in the present era. For viewers who value digital media, the council supports the new branding even though the old number is still operational. It is now required that operators incorporate this particular contact information into their user interfaces. The number should be shown on account dashboards, according to the council. Additionally, they anticipate seeing it in transaction confirmation notifications and marketing mailings.
Trading or Gambling?
The NCPG argues that prediction markets pose serious risks to consumers. These platforms allow users to bet on the outcome of future events. While they often market themselves as financial tools, their mechanics resemble sports betting. The council’s research supports this concern. Their data indicates that weekly traders on these sites display high risk levels. In fact, these users report signs of problem gambling at twice the rate of the general population.
A Defensive Strike
This move puts pressure on operators to act before regulators force their hand. Officials in states like New York and Nevada already watch these markets closely. They worry about “regulatory arbitrage.” This term describes companies that offer gambling products while avoiding gambling laws. By adopting these measures voluntarily, platforms might reduce some of that heat. Visible responsible gambling tools show a commitment to consumer safety. However, this could also backfire. Acknowledging the risk might fuel arguments that these platforms require full sportsbook-style regulation.
Minimal Cost, Maximum Impact
Implementing these changes requires little financial investment. Operators simply need to update their website text and marketing templates. The real cost lies in the shift of perception. For years, prediction markets tried to distance themselves from “gambling.” Adopting a problem gambling helpline blurs that line. Yet, the NCPG insists that consumer safety must come first.
Setting a New Standard
This resolution aims to standardize player protection in a growing sector. If major players like Kalshi comply, it sets a baseline for new entrants. Investors and regulators will likely view this transparency as a requirement for doing business. The industry now faces a choice. They can ignore the request and risk stricter oversight later. Or, they can display the number and accept their role in the broader gambling ecosystem.
