A full online self-exclusion platform is now live by Portugal’s Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ), launched on April 8, 2026. This represents a major structural change in the way that player protection and access will be active for iGaming businesses with national licenses. The new system replaces the old framework, which previously scattered and managed self-exclusion procedures site by site. The system also introduces a provision allowing authorized third parties to initiate exclusion requests on behalf of vulnerable individuals. The rollout of this centralized portal directly connects with the ongoing financial expansion of Portugal’s online iGaming sector. The market is currently developing steadily. Recent SRIJ data shows that gross digital gaming revenues reached €297.1 million in Q3 of 2025. This figure shows the Portuguese online market’s second-highest quarterly revenue total ever. On the other hand, during the same time period, traditional land-based casino earnings decreased by 4.6% yearly. Regulators are normalizing compliance and player protection technologies to fit the size of the online industry as revenue and customer volume continue to shift toward online platforms.
Aligning with Global Compliance Trends
Portugal’s transition to a single registry is symbolic of a more widespread worldwide regulatory trend that iGaming companies are managing in several countries. Brazil moved away from operator-specific rules and prohibited excluded persons from registering on any newly licensed site when it introduced its own national centralized system in December 2025. In a similar way, late last year, Russia introduced a single framework for self-exclusion. That specific system, which received huge support from the domestic industry, sets a strict minimum prohibition period, preventing players from revoking their self-exclusion status within the first twelve months of registration.
Adoption Metrics in Mature Markets
Data from established systems in other major European markets indicates that user uptake tends to be substantial once these portals are active. In the UK, the national self-exclusion register, Gamstop, reported a 40% increase in registrations among the 16-to-24 demographic during the second half of 2025. Operators in the UK also noted a high adoption rate for Gamstop’s auto-renewal feature, which essentially functions as a lifetime block unless the user actively opts out. Meanwhile, Germany’s central database, OASIS, processed approximately 350,000 registrations during its first four years online. For operators in Portugal, these figures suggest that the new SRIJ portal will likely see fast integration and high volume, requiring strong backend compliance to handle the incoming data stream.
