Gaming giants Playtech announced today that Brian Mattingley would be stepping down as non-executive chair after four years in the role.
Mattingley joined Playtech in April 2021 after leaving his role as CEO of 888. He’s set to remain at the company for the next few months to oversee the appointment of a new successor and ensure an orderly transition.
“It has been an absolute privilege to serve as Chair of Playtech and to help steward the company through an important phase of growth and transition,” said Mattingley. “I am proud of the milestones we have achieved as Playtech prepares to embark on a new chapter as a predominantly pure-play B2B business. It is with that in mind that I feel now is the right time to step down. I would like to thank my fellow board members, the leadership team and, above all, the wider Playtech family.”
In addition to nearly a decade as CEO of 888, Mattingley has held senior positions at several top companies, including serving as the chief financial officer of Gala Coral and CEO of Ritz Bingo.
Playtech CEO Mor Weizer praised Mattingley’s contributions during his tenure as chair, stating, “Brian has been an outstanding chair, offering invaluable guidance, constructive challenge and unwavering dedication to the team during a time of significant transformation at Playtech.
“We have benefitted enormously from his strong relationships across the industry and his depth of knowledge and experience. His presence on the board will be greatly missed and we wish him the very best.”
Board Changes Expected at Playtech
The decision to part ways with the gaming veteran follows the sale of Snaitech, Playtech’s Italian B2C division. Flutter is expected to close the roughly $2.8 purchase in the upcoming fiscal Q2.
This move has stirred mixed reactions among shareholders, especially concerning the hefty bonuses awarded to executives in light of the deal. While some shareholders had voiced their discontent, the board moved forward, approving a $103 million executive bonus package.
The coming months will also bring changes to the board, including the restructuring of several key committees. Notably, the Sustainability & Public Policy Committee will be merged with the Regulatory & Compliance Committee, with the company aiming to enhance oversight of these areas.
Linda Marston-Weston, a non-executive director at the company, will chair the new committee, with fellow non-exec director Samy Reeb and senior independent director Ian Penrose as ordinary members.
Playtech is also preparing to appoint a new non-executive director and chair of the Remuneration Committee, as Anna Massion is set to step down from both positions effective February 28. Reeb is already slated to take over the Remuneration Committee chair role, in addition to his responsibilities as a member of the Audit & Risk Committee and new-look Sustainability & Compliance Committee.
