Peru Expects $21 Million in Tax Revenue in 2025 from Internet Betting

For 2025, the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT) of Peru forecasts substantial tax revenues from the online gaming and sports betting sector. The country looks forward to raising around USD 21 million from this sector, the result of the implementation of the 12% tax on the “winner” and the Selective Consumption Tax (ISC), set at 0.03 percent per bet, according to the SUNAT superintendent Víctor Mejía.

Sector Growth and Fiscal Measures

Driving the increased internet penetration in the country and digitalization, the online betting industry in Peru has seen substantial expansion in the last few years. Given this growth, the Peruvian government has enacted tax laws meant to ensure a clear and controlled operating environment for businesses in the industry as well as to generate extra revenues.

SUNAT estimates a combined revenue of USD 180 million from the General Sales Tax (IGV) imposed on digital services and import of intangibles in addition to the particular taxes on internet betting. By 2025, this pushes the overall tax revenue forecast from internet sources up to two hundred one million dollars.

Tax Collection and Compliance Mechanism

SUNAT has put in place a simplified process for registration, declaration, and payment of foreign taxes to help with the gathering of these taxes. Foreign companies working in Peru can therefore effectively and in US dollars meet their tax responsibilities.

The main means of collection for foreign businesses in this sector are reregistration, statements as well as payment from overseas, Superintendent Mejía stated. Companies not filing voluntarily also have an outstanding mechanism for taxes to be held via the financial system.

Registered Businesses and Ongoing Legislation

Presently, three of the four biggest foreign businesses the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has authorized to operate in Peru have already registered in the Single Registry of Taxpayers (RUC); one more has to finish their registration. Such strict compliance shows companies’ desire to work within the legislative structure set out by the Peruvian authorities.

Impact on Industry and the Future of Regulation

Peru’s control and supervision of internet gaming signals a significant first in sector formalization. These policies not only guarantee the State has a steady revenue stream but also safeguard consumers and stop industry-wide cheating.

Peru is expected to keep refining its tax and regulatory policies to fit international trends and draw in overseas capital as the online gaming sector advances. Clearness and stability in the regulatory landscape might help to make the nation a standard for online gaming regulation in Latin America.

In essence, the prediction of USD 21 million in taxes from internet gaming provides a stark illustration of the financial effect of the sector in Peru. The nation is set to become a major player in the online gaming scene in the region thanks to progressively effective collection procedures and ever-better control.
