The Pennsylvania iGaming market has once again broken a record with December 2024 revenues reaching $223.6 million, the second straight month on the back of $200.5 million revenues recorded in November. The latest figures represent a 35.5% increase from December 2023 and an 11.5% rise from the previous month.
iGaming Revenue Breakdown
- Online Slots: Online slots were the biggest contributor to iGaming revenues, which reached $164.3 million. This was up 40.5% compared to the same period a year earlier, with players wagering a total of $4.28 billion on the games in December.
- Internet Table Games: Meanwhile, internet table games revenue increased 24.2%, while online poker revenues rose a more modest 2.9% to $2.5 million.
- Player Participation: Players were highly active, having spent $3.01 billion on internet table games and an unreported amount on online poker.
Market Leaders
Hollywood Casino at Penn National remains the market leader in iGaming with revenue of $86.4 million, 41.8% higher compared to 2023. Valley Forge Casino Resort followed in second place, at $61.3 million, up 48.4%. Rivers Casino Philadelphia finished third at $35.2 million.
Sports Betting Slumps
While the iGaming market is booming, sports betting took a nosedive last December. Gross gaming revenues dropped to $21.9 million, 69.9% less than a year ago and far from the record $77.1 million set in November. The losses were largely attributed to customer-friendly results—the players made big wins while the operators were at the receiving end.
- Handle and Revenue: Total sports betting handle was $893.4 million, a decrease of 3.5% year-over-year. Of that, $848.8 million was bet online, while retail betting generated $44.6 million.
- Operator Performance: FanDuel and its partner Valley Forge Casino Resort remained in the market lead but even they suffered unfavourable sports results.
Other Market Trends
Land-Based Casinos: Physical slots revenue fell 2.7% to $202.1 million, while revenue from retail table games declined 4.3% to $79.4 million.
Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs): The VGT revenue declined 0.9% to $3.4 million.
Fantasy Sports: It was up 9.7%, reaching $2.7 million.
Tax Revenue
All gaming revenue came to $223.7 million in tax revenues for the state of Pennsylvania in December. Of that, iGaming accounted for $98.2 million, followed by retail slots of $102.2 million and table games at $13.2 million.
In other words, the iGaming sector in Pennsylvania continued to grow in December, though some other verticals such as sports betting and land-based casinos declined. Yet overall, the gambling market is strong, with iGaming taking the lead across innovation and growth.
