Ontario’s iGaming Market Hits New Heights in August

26th september – Ontario’s regulated online gambling sector posted its strongest performance to date in August, setting a new benchmark for betting activity.

According to the latest figures from iGaming Ontario, total handle across online casinos and sportsbooks reached CA$8.14bn for the month. This is the highest figure recorded since the province opened its market in April 2022, and only the second time overall that monthly spending has crossed the $8bn threshold, following May’s $8.07bn.

Revenue also saw an upswing, climbing to $334.8m. While this falls just short of the $338m peak reached earlier this year, it still marks one of the most lucrative months Ontario’s operators have seen. Both handle and revenue rose by 8% compared to July’s numbers, continuing the market’s upward trajectory after a brief cooling period during the summer.

The year-on-year gains highlight the depth of Ontario’s growth: in August 2024, operators reported $6.05bn in handle and $238.3m in revenue. This means the market has expanded by more than $2bn in betting activity and nearly $100m in revenue in just twelve months.

Player activity is also moving in a positive direction. Active accounts increased by 7% to just over 1m in August, reversing three months of decline. On average, users generated $330 in revenue, edging slightly higher than July and almost matching last year’s record.

Casino gaming continued to dominate the landscape, representing 89% of the handle with $7.2bn wagered. Casino revenue reached $267.8m, an increase of 6% from July, accounting for four-fifths of the overall market. Sports betting, meanwhile, carved out a bigger slice of the action with $765m in wagers – up 11% month-on-month. Operators collected $60.2m in betting revenue, a 14% increase, giving sportsbooks an 18% market share.

With both casino and sports betting moving in step, Ontario’s online gambling market shows no signs of slowing, suggesting that the province’s regulated system is still unlocking new potential more than two years after launch.
