Norway’s gambling regulator has blocked 236 gambling websites since DNS blocking was introduced under the country’s new gambling legislation.
The measure was implemented as part of Norway’s updated Gambling Act, which came into force on January 1, 2025. Alongside DNS blocking, the legislation strengthened existing restrictions on payment processing for unlicensed operators targeting Norwegian players.
According to correspondence between the Norwegian Gambling Authority (Lotteritilsynet) and the Ministry of Culture dated June 12, a total of 236 websites have been blocked since the system was introduced. The latest blocking order was issued in February 2026.
A review of all blocked domains shows mixed results. While many sites remain inaccessible through standard Norwegian internet connections, a significant number have adopted alternative domains, mirror sites and other technical solutions that allow users to continue accessing their services.
The figures highlight both the scale of Norway’s enforcement efforts and the ongoing challenge regulators face in preventing offshore operators from reaching local players.
With 236 domains already blocked and further enforcement actions expected, DNS blocking remains a key part of Norway’s strategy to protect its regulated gambling market.
