Oddschecker Reports Security Breach, Assures Situation Under Control

Oddschecker, the betting odds comparison platform, has confirmed it was hit by a data breach affecting user information.

In an email sent to account holders this week, the company described the incident as an “IT security incident involving user data.” Details exposed included passwords, contact information, and dates of birth.

FairPlay Sports Media (FPSM), which owns Oddschecker, stressed that the situation had been contained. A spokesperson told SBC News, “We recently identified, contained and resolved an IT security incident involving a limited part of our systems. This did not disrupt our usual services and we continue to operate as normal. We are liaising closely with our users, partners and the relevant authorities.”

The company reassured customers that it has “not identified any evidence” of the stolen data being misused, including phishing attempts sent to personal email addresses.

Oddschecker adds to growing list of iGaming cyberattacks

Oddschecker’s breach is the latest reminder of how exposed betting and gaming platforms are to cybercrime.

The company told customers it had worked with a “leading team of external IT specialists to swiftly close down the incident” and confirmed it had reported the matter to the authorities, likely including the UK’s Information Commission’s Office.

Users were urged to change their passwords and to update credentials on other accounts if they reused the same login details. In its message, Oddschecker noted that “these types of incidents are increasingly common in today’s digital world and affect organisations in all sectors.”

That warning reflects a wider reality. Online bookmakers, casinos and affiliate platforms hold large amounts of personal data, making them prime targets for cybercriminals.

Attacks have ranged from IT breaches to mishandling of data and outright scams. Earlier this year, ScamInfo.ai analysed more than 7,000 websites and found that over 34.7% of “critical risk” sites were betting and gambling platforms.

The industry has seen repeated cases across different regions. In the United States, BetMGM admitted in 2022 that “several patron records” had been accessed in a breach, while Boyd Gaming later faced a lawsuit after a cybersecurity incident was disclosed in an SEC filing.

In the UK, Paddy Power and Betfair were hit by a major attack last year. Even in Africa, a June investigation in Kenya revealed a “systematic compromise of subscriber data” at Betika, sparking legal disputes.
