Recently, the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) gathered licensed gaming operators at Mestil Hotel for an important stakeholder engagement aimed at boosting compliance within the industry. This event served as a platform for key players in Uganda’s gaming sector to discuss the significance of adhering to regulations and fostering collaboration.
NLGRB CEO Denis Mudene opened the session by acknowledging the operators’ increasing commitment to regulatory compliance. He highlighted their essential contribution to Uganda’s national development through enhanced revenue collection. Mudene also shared news about the Board’s upcoming move to Luthuli House in Bugolobi, along with plans to establish regional offices in Gulu, Mbale, and Jinja by the end of July.
Chairman Aloysius Mugasa Adyeri was also present and expressed gratitude to the gaming operators for their participation, emphasizing that the engagement aimed to deepen their understanding of compliance related to the Lotteries and Gaming Act, Anti-Money Laundering measures, and operational requirements.
The dialogue also focused on integrating with the National Central Electronic Monitoring System (NCEMS), highlighting the collective responsibility of the industry to uphold these standards.
“Compliance is not a burden, and it is the baseline. It is the foundation upon which a credible and sustainable industry is built. When operators fully comply with the law, the Sector benefits: Public confidence is enhanced, government revenue increases, and vulnerable populations especially the youth are better protected” stated Aloysius Mugasa Adyeri.
Operators Form New Association to Enhance Compliance
During the engagement, the operators had the chance to voice their recommendations, leading to a significant announcement: The formation of a new association by the betting companies. David Kyilonde, one of the operators and the General Secretary of this new association, expressed optimism that this collective effort would support the NLGRB in fulfilling its regulatory responsibilities.
Richard Muteesaasira Kavuma, Senior Manager of Regulatory Compliance at the Board, took the opportunity to outline the Board’s expectations regarding compliance, licensing, and IT matters. He pointed out a notable compliance gap related to advertising practices, emphasizing the need for improvement in this area.
“Compliance with the regulatory requirements will improve the operator’s performance and keep the regulator’s whip away,” Kavuma stated during his presentation.
This new association aims to bridge such gaps and foster stronger partnerships between operators and the NLGRB.
