The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board has announced that Fox Bet Limited, operating under the MelBet brand, has officially ceased business in Uganda.
Effective January 1, 2026, the company’s licence was revoked, and it is no longer authorised to provide gaming services in the country.
In its Monday (Jan 5) notice, the regulator urged players to act quickly by withdrawing any balances and closing their accounts with the operator. The Board also reminded the public that using unlicensed platforms carries serious risks, including the possibility of losing funds and having no legal protection if disputes arise.
New year, new rules for Ugandan gambling sector
The NLGRB entered 2026 with a stricter licensing framework, which started with the year’s license renewal process that began in October.
Under the revised framework, game providers must submit detailed rules for any new offerings while casinos carry heavier obligations. These include registering as accountable persons with the Financial Intelligence Authority and filing annual reports on anti‑money laundering and counter‑terrorism financing measures.
Operators also had to submit a wide range of documentation, which included tax clearance certificates, audited financial statements, good conduct records for directors and shareholders, annual returns, business plans, and evidence of corporate social responsibility and staff training.
Certification from the National Information Technology Authority–Uganda is also mandatory, confirming that operators’ systems meet national IT and security standards. Even electronic gaming machines must be linked to the National Central Electronic Monitoring System to allow real‑time oversight.
The rules now extend to personal and suppliers, with key employees mandated to present contracts, qualifications, and proof of competence, while machine and software providers are expected to deliver authorization letters, technical details, manuals, and privacy policies.
