NLGRB Boosts Gambling Presence with Six New Offices in Uganda

As Uganda continues its battle against illegal gambling, the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) is stepping up by opening six new offices to expand its reach and ensure compliance.

The new regional offices were launched in cities like Mbale, Mbarara, Gulu, and Jinja, and are all set to be operational by the end of the month. They will serve as key enforcement and compliance hubs, tasked with overseeing gambling operators and enforcing regulations.

These offices will also collaborate with local communities to combat illegal gambling activities effectively. NLGRB CEO Denis Ngabirano noted, “The sector is experiencing rapid expansion,” emphasizing the need for stronger oversight in this growing industry.

Head Office to be Relocated

In addition to expanding its regional presence, the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) is moving its main office to a new location in Kampala this month, representing a significant milestone in the board’s ongoing transformation.

Local towns are reacting positively to the changes, especially in Mbarara, where Mayor Robert Kakyebezi expressed enthusiasm for the new office. He stated, “The planned regional office in Mbarara will help address local gaming challenges,” reflecting the community’s hopes for improved oversight.

The new offices were announced in May at a meeting in Mbarara, where senior law enforcement figures, including district police commanders and criminal investigation officers, along with local leaders and gaming experts from various districts, were present to announce a collaboration between the NLGRB and Rwizi Police. This collaboration is meant to combat underage gambling in the country and tackle illegal gaming operators.

As the gambling sector continues to evolve rapidly, the NLGRB’s decision to establish regional offices indicates a proactive approach to regulatory oversight.
