A recent meeting between the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and representatives from the gaming industry marked a significant step forward, enhancing data privacy in Nigeria.
The delegation included members from the Association of Nigerian Bookmakers (ANB) and the Nigeria Licensed Lottery Operators Forum (NLLOF), and it was led by NLLOF Chairman Mr. Chima Onwuka.
The discussion focused on ensuring the gaming sector aligns with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDP Act) while addressing the challenges of processing large amounts of personal data.
With millions of Nigerians relying on their services, the gaming sector emphasized the importance of complying with the NDP Act. Delegates sought guidance on implementing effective data protection measures and expressed a desire for training sessions for their members and agents.
They also proposed ongoing annual engagements with the NDPC to stay updated on changing regulations and best practices in data privacy.
“Their willingness to engage with the Commission demonstrates a shared understanding that robust data protection practices are essential for building trust among citizens and stakeholders.” He added, “At the NDPC, we view data controllers and processors as partners. Our aim is not to hinder innovation but to regulate in a way that supports growth and ease of doing business,” stated NDPC CEO Dr. Vincent Olatunji.
Sector-specific compliance guidelines in the works
Dr. Olatunji emphasized that the Commission is actively developing tailored compliance guidelines specifically for the gaming industry, recognizing its distinctive scale and the sensitive nature of the personal data involved.
The NDPC aims to provide comprehensive guidance, training, and ongoing support to help gaming operators adopt internationally accepted standards for privacy and data protection, thereby enhancing public trust in the sector.
The meeting highlighted the Commission’s commitment to collaboration. Instead of serving as a roadblock to innovation, the NDPC intends to view data controllers and processors as partners in establishing a secure, transparent, and reliable personal data ecosystem.
Given that the gaming industry processes personal data for over 60 million Nigerians each month, these discussions are essential for clarifying compliance responsibilities and assisting operators in managing data with care and responsibility.
