In a significant step to tackle the rising concern of gambling addiction in Nigeria, the GamblePause Initiative Africa has unveiled the country’s first free gambling rehabilitation center. Located in Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos, the center is staffed by a dedicated team of clinical psychologists and trained counselors who will provide specialized care to those suffering from problem gambling.
According to GamblePause founder, Ladipo Abiose Akolade, the decision to establish a physical rehabilitation facility came from feedback from clients using the organization’s remote services. While many appreciated the virtual support, they expressed a strong desire for face-to-face interaction in a safe and therapeutic environment to aid their recovery.
“We listened closely to our clients,” said Abiose. “They needed a space where they could heal face-to-face, engage with others who understand their struggles, and receive expert care in a setting that prioritizes dignity, empathy, and confidentiality. This center is our response to that call.”
For now, only appointments are allowed, so the staff can effectively manage client flow and ensure that each individual receives the attention they deserve. “Appointments can be scheduled through our official social media platforms,” added Abiose.
GamblePause Calls for More Partners
As GamblePause seeks to expand its reach and effectiveness, the rehabilitation center currently offers walk-in (non-residential) treatment, with plans to introduce full residential services in the near future. To increase the center’s impact and ensure its long-term sustainability, GamblePause is actively engaging with key stakeholders, including mental health professionals, local government agencies, and potential international partners.
“We call on more stakeholders, industry leaders, and philanthropists to partner with us. This rehabilitation centre marks a critical step in advancing responsible gambling practices in Nigeria and creating a support system that reflects empathy from the gaming industry toward its players,” said Abiose.
The approach taken by the center focuses on the various layers of gambling addiction, including the psychological, emotional, and behavioural components. Clients will have access to individual counseling, group therapy, family support sessions, and education on relapse prevention and life skills.
This well-rounded model recognizes that effective recovery involves addressing not just the addiction but also the deeper issues surrounding it.
Fighting Underage Gambling Also on the Agenda
The rehabilitation center is set to play a crucial role in addressing the challenge of underage gambling as part of GamblePause’s mission. To tackle this issue, the organization will implement awareness campaigns, engage with schools, and conduct workshops for parents.
These efforts aim to empower communities by providing the necessary tools and information to prevent gambling-related harm before it starts. The organization has emphasized that its goals go beyond just addressing current problems; it seeks to build a proactive culture that prioritizes prevention and resilience in Nigeria.
As it looks to the future, GamblePause Initiative Africa is determined to expand its network of support services and ensure that both rehabilitation and education on responsible gambling are accessible to all individuals, irrespective of their backgrounds or financial circumstances.
