The National Football League is still keeping prediction markets at arm’s length. But new comments from one of its top executives suggest the league is at least leaving the door open for the long term.
Miller: “Innovative” and “dynamic,” but regulation still unclear
Speaking on Radio Row ahead of Super Bowl LX, NFL executive Jeff Miller described prediction markets as “innovative” and “dynamic.” He also said they can work as a fan engagement tool. Still, he made it clear the league does not feel it has enough clarity on how the space will be regulated.
A softer tone than the league’s December warning
Those comments stand out because the NFL sounded far tougher in late 2025. In testimony to the U.S. House Agriculture Committee, Miller said the league was “particularly troubled” by sports-related futures contracts launching nationwide, including in places where sports betting is not legal. The NFL pushed Congress and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to block sports-related event contracts unless strong safeguards are in place.
Now, Miller’s message reads more like a long conversation than an immediate fight. He said the league expects to spend “a lot of time” discussing prediction markets in the coming months, and possibly years. He also suggested that if platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket continue moving toward a more regulated future, the NFL would have to work out how to deal with that reality.
Still a hard “no” on Super Bowl ads
Even with the softer tone, the league is not acting like a partner-in-waiting. Recent reporting says the NFL has barred prediction market advertising from the Super Bowl broadcast. That is a clear sign the league still views the category as too unsettled for its biggest stage.
Goodell’s position hasn’t changed
Commissioner Roger Goodell has also signaled patience. In earlier remarks, he said prediction markets are not something the NFL is about to enter into, citing legal uncertainty and integrity concerns.
For now, the NFL’s stance looks simple: cautious, skeptical, and still drawing lines. But it is also talking about the space as something it may have to face, not something it can ignore.
