When one player wagered $120 million in a single week, it proved New York’s gambling market has officially entered uncharted territory.
The New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) has reported the state’s casino and sports wagering performance for August 2025, as casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) grew 4.7% to $65 million, whilst sports wagering generated a handle of just over $2 billion and a GGR of $178.2 million.
The $2 billion handle for August 2025 represents an increase of 41.9% year-over-year and the first time New York bettors have produced a sports wagering handle over $2 billion since May.
FanDuel dominates revenue whilst DraftKings leads handle
The market leaders are playing completely different games with the same customers.
FanDuel managed to generate the highest revenue of any operator in New York for August 2025, reporting $66.9 million whilst DraftKings was a close second at $62.3 million.
The Flutter Entertainment-owned sportsbook reported an August 2025 handle of $561.9 million compared to DraftKings which took in $579.6 million worth of bets throughout the period.
Fanatics delivers record month with unusual hold rate
Sometimes the biggest headlines come from the most unexpected sources.
DraftKings wasn’t the only operator to surpass FanDuel in total handle for August 2025, as Fanatics reported a new monthly high with $565.8 million generated by New York bettors.
The sportsbook reported a GGR of just $16.1 million, however, equating to a hold of nearly 2.9%. The new monthly high for Fanatics was primarily driven by a single user wagering close to $120 million across one week in August.
Table games decline whilst slots surge in Empire State
The casino floor tells two different stories about New York gambling preferences.
Despite slot revenue increasing by 9.5% from the prior year period to nearly $47 million, table game activity witnessed a decrease in revenue of 4.2% for a total of $16.5 million.
Three of the four casinos which report to the NYSGC generated increases in GGR year-over-year, with Rivers Casino producing the highest revenue of any property with a GGR of $20.1 million for August 2025, representing an increase of 7.3%.
Del Lago leads casino growth whilst Resorts World struggles
The regional casino performance reveals clear winners and losers.
Del Lago Casino reported an August 2025 GGR of $15.5 million, witnessing the highest year-over-year growth of all properties at 9%.
Tioga Downs increased its GGR by approximately $500,000 from the figure reported for August 2024, managing to produce $10.1 million whilst Resorts World Catskills generated the only decrease for August 2025, falling by 1.4% to $19.4 million.
August marks highest casino revenue of 2025
The Empire State continues building momentum across both gambling verticals.
With $65 million in GGR generated throughout August 2025, the Empire State managed to increase its casino revenue by 7.3% month-over-month and represents the highest total recorded for 2025 up to this point.
Generating $178.2 million in GGR throughout August 2025 equates to an increase of 42.6% from the prior year period, whilst sports betting handle showcases growth of 45.9% and 14.5% month-over-month, respectively.
