Nigeria, a major player in Africa’s gambling scene, has introduced a national self-exclusion portal called SafePlay. This initiative aims to educate players about the risks of excessive gambling while providing essential tools to help them avoid gambling-related harm.
The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) spearheaded this launch, emphasizing the importance of consumer protection. At a meeting held at the Regen Luxury Suites in Ikeja, industry representatives gathered to discuss how this initiative will positively impact the market, particularly in safeguarding players from the dangers associated with gambling.
Self-Exclusion, Professional Help, Plus Other Tools Available
SafePlay not only allows individuals to voluntarily exclude themselves from all licensed gambling platforms in the state but also directs them to valuable resources for ongoing recovery.
The portal will include links to support organizations and tools specifically designed to assist those dealing with gambling issues, helping them to not only shield themselves from gambling but also address the underlying factors contributing to their behavior.
During the launch on August 6, LSLGA highlighted the portal’s operational framework and compliance requirements, as well as its long-term goals and sustainability. A significant aspect of this initiative is the provision of access to professional support services during self-exclusion periods, ensuring users receive guidance and assistance when they need it most.
“It goes beyond revenue generation”
Fasan Oluyemisi, former Chief Administrative Officer of the National Lottery Regulatory Commission, spoke to iGB about the launch and emphasized the importance of implementing such a tool in Nigeria.
She expressed her delight at the LSLGA’s initiative, viewing it as a strong commitment to player safety and responsible gaming. Oluyemisi noted that this effort reflects a shift in focus, stating, “It goes beyond revenue generation. It prioritizes people and their well-being in regulation.”
This tool is not just about compliance, it’s about empowering individuals to manage their gambling behavior and reduce the risk of addiction. Oluyemisi highlighted that while gambling can be entertaining, it comes with inherent risks that need to be handled responsibly.
“Many people battling gambling addiction often suffer quietly, as the signs are not always visible, unlike substance abuse. That is why raising awareness and providing access to tools like SafePlay is so important, It offers individuals the opportunity to make informed, healthy decisions, without fear, shame or blame.”
SafePlay is not the first of its kind in Nigeria, as there are popular tools like the BetBlocker app. These tools help players limit their gambling activities and even provide parental controls to prevent underage access, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to responsible gambling practices.
