A growing betting culture is forcing the NBA to draw a line.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver has renewed his call for federal gambling regulation in the United States, warning that the fragmented state-by-state system leaves the sport exposed to manipulation and misconduct.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Silver said a more unified framework is needed to ensure fairness, transparency, and the protection of both players and fans.
Silver calls for stronger oversight
The NBA believes consistency is key to maintaining trust.
Silver explained that the absence of national standards has created uneven monitoring and enforcement. He argued that a federal approach could help prevent suspicious betting activity and improve the ability to detect irregularities.
Silver said:
“I think, probably, there should be more regulation, frankly. I wish there was federal legislation rather than state by state. I think you’ve got to monitor the amount of promotion, the amount of advertising around it.”
“With this regulated structure of legalized betting, we can monitor it in ways that were unimaginable years ago. If there’s any aberrational behavior: People betting large numbers who hadn’t historically done so, just opening an account to place bets, or even the geotargeting, we know exactly from where the bets are being placed, very specifically.”
His comments come amid a surge in sports betting activity across the US, with concerns growing about the accessibility and intensity of gambling promotions during broadcasts and live events.
NBA acts on prop bets and player safety
The league wants to protect players from pressure and misuse.
Silver confirmed that the NBA has asked licensed betting operators to limit certain prop bets, especially those involving two-way players who may have less influence on the outcome of games.
He stated:
“We’ve asked some of our partners to pull back some of the prop bets, especially when they’re on two-way players, guys who don’t have the same stake in the competition, where it’s too easy to manipulate something, which seems otherwise small and inconsequential to the overall score.”
The commissioner also stressed the importance of protecting athletes from the backlash of losing bets, noting that player abuse and harassment linked to wagering outcomes have increased in recent years.
Silver explained:
“It’s often the case that your team wins and a player scores 25 points, but the fan, the bettor, had bet that the player was going to score 28 points or 30 points. We have to protect the competitors. We want to protect the environment in the arena of people getting out of hand.”
