Minnesota state legislators have now officially advanced a bill to restrict prediction markets in the state, while simultaneously discussing the legalization of online sportsbooks and sports betting. While an ongoing attempt to legalize sports betting is still in uncertain progression, following an informational hearing in the Senate, legislators of the state took a major step this week by outlawing prediction markets.
Officially on Tuesday, the committee moved forward with a new regulation designed for prediction markets, describing them as illegal gambling.
On the other hand, a separate bill, which could potentially legalize sports betting within the state, was debated among state lawmakers. The fact that the betting proposal was not put to a vote describes the state’s continued disagreements over whether and how to improve the scale and expand legal gambling.
Status of Bill Regarding Prediction Markets
The purpose of Senate Bill 4511 is to outlaw specific kinds of prediction market contracts in the state. Lawmakers strongly backed the idea of treating these platforms as gaming operations rather than as legitimate financial instruments, and they voted to advance the measure. A functioning prediction market within the state would be considered unlawful, as a felony. In addition to this, violators of the law would face a prison time which is for a 5 year period, or a penalty in the amount of $10,000.
