Mexico’s National Lottery has broken records with its special draw, “México con M de Migrante“, which is officially this year’s best-selling lottery event. With an estimated net revenue of more than MXN 100 million (USD 5.5 million) after the payment of prizes, the draw not only surpassed expectations but also set new records in the institution’s history.
Honoring Migrants as National Heroes
This was the first draw under the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum to be dedicated to a specific cause, said Olivia Salomón, director general of the National Lottery. It was held in honor of Mexican migrants in the United States, in symbolic gratitude for their permanent contributions and sacrifices.
“Today, Mexico beats on both sides of the border. Today, we celebrate those who never stopped being part of this homeland, even if life took them far away. This draw is for them—our compatriots, migrants who are heroines and heroes of our nation”, Salomón emphasized during the announcement.
The project aimed to generate not only financial traction but also emotional and cultural ties, framing the drawing as a symbolic embrace that crosses borders.
Record-Breaking Performance
The Gran Sorteo Especial No. 303 exceeded sales expectations by a very large margin. In comparison with the previous large draw of May 10, sales were up by 118.4%. In comparison with its 2024 counterpart (Sorteo No. 291), the sales were up by 124.5% this year, whereas those of 2023 (Sorteo No. 278) were a whopping 230%.
This performance solidifies its standing as the highest-performing lottery event of the year and underscores the success of new initiatives that reached out more and reconnected the institution to people.
Grassroots Engagement and Marketing Innovation
Officials noted that the draw’s success was not random but instead the result of a deliberate, community-centric strategy. The National Lottery took the campaign to the streets, plazas, and border areas, engaging directly with families, migrant networks, and local government. The activations helped to create unity and pride around the event.
“The nature of this homage required building it close to the people“, Salomón explained. “Wherever we went, families talked of their pride, and all three branches of government embraced this cause with conviction.”
This strategy of proximity reignited trust in the institution, showing how cultural relevance can drive consumer engagement when combined with good marketing.
Facilitating Consular Services in the United States
Besides breaking sales records, the drawing had a tangible social cause. At the request of President Sheinbaum, the funds raised, after prizes are awarded, will be used to expand consular services to Mexican migrants in the United States.
The money will go towards increasing protection, assistance, and outreach to the community abroad at a time marked by what Salomón described as “challenges and uncertainty.” By putting profits into consular services, the government aims to bring real benefits to migrants while acknowledging their integral role in the country’s social and economic life.
A Draw with a Cause
The México con M de Migrante drawing shows how national institutions can use symbolic initiatives to generate economic and social value. By honoring migrants and putting them at the center of Mexico’s identity, the National Lottery not only recorded unprecedented financial success but also strengthened ties among citizens in Mexico and those abroad.
As officials noted, the draw’s success reflects a combination of innovative sales techniques, outreach to communities, and the powerful emotional appeal of dedicating a national lottery to the millions of migrants who remain very much a part of Mexico’s story.
