The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has initiated a formal investigation into an alleged match-fixing scheme involving the Liga Premier MX, the third division of the Mexican Football League. The investigation was prompted by the filing of a complaint indicating possible attempts at match manipulation involving footballer Sofía Álvarez Tostado and a small group of players.
In an initial preventive measure, the competition authorities have suspended the scheduled match between Héroes de Zaci FC and Cañoneros FC, scheduled for matchday 16 of the Liga Premier MX. The suspension is intended to allow the authorities to investigate the potential irregularities while maintaining the integrity of the competition.
Allegations and Role of Sofía Álvarez Tostado
According to the case file, the suspect, Sofía Álvarez Tostado, offered financial incentives to individuals within the football environment in an attempt to manipulate the results of a sporting event. The investigation into the case reveals that the suspect offered incentives to manipulate the results of a sporting event, which is a serious concern regarding the influence of illegal betting on the outcomes of sporting events in the lower divisions of the Mexican Football League.
On January 15, the FMF issued an official notice to all the executives, players, and coaching staff of the clubs within the league. The notice urged all the parties involved in the competition to be alert to all acts that could violate the competition regulations.
The federation reiterated the need for transparency and cooperation in the maintenance of fair play, particularly in the lower divisions of the Mexican Football League, which could be more susceptible to external pressures.
Player Background and Public Reaction
Sofía Álvarez Tostado, who is 25 years old, has a rich professional experience in football. The player has competed in the Liga MX Femenil in 2022 and has since moved to European countries, competing for Valencia CF in Spain and Beşiktaş in Turkey. The player won a league title in April 2025 for AEK Athens.
The player deactivated her social media accounts after the investigation was made public, a fact that has contributed to the increasing media attention surrounding the matter.
Clubs Respond and Protective Measures Taken
The clubs involved in the matter, particularly Héroes de Zaci FC, have since confirmed that less than five of their players have been identified as possibly involved in the matter and are currently under investigation by the relevant authorities.
In a statement released by the club, it was stated that the players involved in the matter may have been subjected to threats and extortion by third parties who are not associated with the club or Liga Premier MX. According to the statement, these third parties are associated with illegal betting activities that have been established in the football environment.
The players involved in the matter have since been separated from their clubs as a precautionary measure.
A Growing Challenge for Mexican Football
The FMF stated that clubs and their players have a legal and ethical responsibility to report any irregular contact that may be associated with match-fixing activities.
The involvement of illegal betting activities has become a growing challenge for lower-tier football in Mexico. The current investigation has highlighted the need to monitor and address the matter to ensure that the integrity of football competitions in the country is upheld.
