Casino gaming, lottery sales, and sports wagering combined to provide substantial funding for education, community initiatives, and public services.
The Maryland Lottery, state casinos, sportsbooks, and daily fantasy sports operators generated $1.59 billion in contributions to state programmes in Fiscal Year 2025, with nearly half of that total directed to education. According to Maryland Lottery and Gaming, the combined sectors delivered an average of $4.35 million per day to state coffers.
Casino gaming accounted for the largest share, generating $831.3 million in contributions, including $606.2 million for the Education Trust Fund (ETF). Lottery contributions reached $667.2 million, while sports wagering and daily fantasy sports added $89.9 million.
Lottery achieves fourth-best year on record
Strong scratch-off sales kept Maryland’s lottery among the nation’s top performers.
Total lottery sales reached $2.63 billion, the fourth-highest figure in its 52-year history. Scratch-off tickets led with $1.06 billion, marking the fourth consecutive year above the $1 billion threshold.
Players collected $1.67 billion in prizes, averaging nearly $4.6 million per day. There were 1,638 prizes exceeding $10,000, including 490 worth $50,000 or more and 33 of at least $1 million. Retailers earned $195.7 million in commissions, averaging more than $45,000 each.
Casino sector posts third-best annual revenue
Maryland’s six casinos continue to provide steady funding for education and local programmes.
Casino revenue from slots and table games reached $1.96 billion in FY2025, the third-best result since the market launched. Contributions of $831.3 million included $606.2 million for the ETF, which funds early childhood education, public schools, and capital projects.
Since 2010, casinos have directed more than $6.4 billion to the ETF. Other allocations in FY2025 included $105.1 million to local community programmes, $95.2 million to horseracing, $20.4 million to the Small, Minority and Women-Owned Business Fund, and $4.4 million to responsible gaming initiatives.
Good to know: Maryland’s casinos generated $165.7 million in revenue in July 2025, down 2.5% year-on-year.
Sports wagering and fantasy sports see growth
Sports betting contributions rose more than 47% year-on-year.
Sports wagering generated $88.9 million for the state in FY2025, up from $60.3 million in FY2024. Mobile operators now contribute 20% of taxable proceeds to education, while retail operators contribute 15%.
Daily fantasy sports operators added over $1 million to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund. Combined, sports wagering and daily fantasy sports contributed $5.7 million to problem gambling prevention programmes.
Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin summed up the year’s performance:
“These are fun and games, but our role in responsibly generating revenue is serious. We hope we also generate some good times along the way, but supporting vital state programs is never far from our minds.”
