The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has imposed strict new rules to protect young people from the dangers of online gaming. They are considered a vulnerable group, so the body is setting up legislation to totally prohibit anyone under the age of 18 from participating in gambling activities.
MAGLA’s Director-General Racheal Mijiga held a workshop on regulatory sensitisation in Mangochi featuring media representatives, industry experts, and operators. The event was planned to guarantee flawless application across the gambling industry and help stakeholders understand the new legal framework.
Industry Support for the New Regulations
Betway Chief Operations Officer Charles Phiri praised MAGLA’s initiatives to promote responsible gaming and legislative reforms. He said in the interview, “We fully support these developments. Betway is committed to upholding the new regulations, and we will ensure our staff is thoroughly trained to comply with the new rules. We also plan to incorporate additional player protection measures and self-exclusion options to further reinforce responsible gambling.”
Other operators have expressed similar opinions on responsible gambling programs and shown a commitment to complying with the new rules. Many have also hinted at implementing elite security protocols, such as identity verification technologies, to prevent underage betting.
Racheal Mijiga further underlined the need to shield young people from the possible psychological and social effects of excessive gambling. She advised industry operators to impose strict age verification policies as offenders would suffer heavy fines.
“We must shield our youth from the serious risks that gambling poses. Under the new regulations, anyone found allowing individuals under 18 to participate in gambling activities will be fined K20 million. These rules create a safer gaming environment for all, not only about enforcement,” Mijiga explained.
Strengthening Player Protection and Industry Transparency
Aside from banning underage gambling, the new regulatory framework will cover other measures to boost industry transparency and player protection, including:

- National lottery regulations
- Player protection laws
- Advertisement regulations
- Electronic monitoring system
- Internet gaming laws
The electronic monitoring system has been a welcome change, allowing operators to integrate with MAGLA’s platform. This system will promote compliance and enhance transparency across the sector. It will also enable real-time monitoring of gaming activities, ensuring that operators adhere to fair play practices and financial integrity standards.
Raising Awareness of Gambling Risks
MAGLA will develop public awareness programs as part of the amended legislation. The goal is to educate young people on the downsides of gambling without a plan. Responsible gambling habits and the significance of accurate decisions will be the primary focus of these programs.
Furthermore, MAGLA has collaborated with several different groups to carry out educational programs across the country in schools and community centres. This provides young people with an education on making responsible decisions. .
