The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has announced a new list detailing the operators authorized to provide online gaming, sports betting, and lottery services. This move aims to tackle the rising issue of unlicensed gaming activities that have been a concern for regulators.
According to the list, only ten operators are currently approved for sports betting in Malawi. These include well-known names like:
- World Star Betting
- Premier Bet Limited
- Mobipay Limited
- Supapesa Limited (Betyanga)
- Port Achia Trade Limited (888 Bets)
- Betika Limited
- Golden Bay Limited (Betway)
- Kuwina Limited (Betpawa)
- Moors World of Sports Limited
- Bola Bet
In terms of land-based casinos, four establishments have received official recognition: Colony Club Casino in both Blantyre and Lilongwe, as well as Casino Marina located in Lilongwe and Blantyre. Additionally, Min Monte Gaming Limited and DBR International WAP Limited are the only operators authorized to offer wide-area progressive gaming machines.
Two categories for lottery licensees
MAGLA has classified lottery licenses into two distinct categories: National Lottery operators and Unspecified lottery operators. Afrigaming International Limited, operating as Zonse Lotto, and Premier Lotto Limited fall under the first category, both authorized to run national-level lottery games.
The second category includes five companies: Mobipay Limited, Radio Entertainment Limited, London Winners Limited, Kemal Holdings Limited, and Distribution of Wealth Limited.
As illegal gambling activities have been on the rise, the authority aims to educate the public about these legitimate options to diminish the black market’s appeal and uphold the integrity of the gaming sector.
MAGLA has urged citizens to avoid unlicensed operators, highlighting the risks associated with such choices, including unfair gaming practices and financial losses. The authority also reminded the public that running gambling services without a license is illegal and warned that those who violate this rule will face severe penalties under the law.
