The Macau government quickly responded to assist local companies in NAPE, a region affected by the impending closure of multiple satellite casinos by the end of 2025. To enhance visitor traffic and stimulate spending, a special food and cultural creativity market was set up and opened on August 15. In only the first four days, the market produced around MOP 200,000 (approximately US$25,000) in revenue, a good beginning for this community event.
The market leverages the dynamic local culture and gastronomic creativity, welcoming 33 local businesses who lease stalls to accept visitors as well as locals. The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) collaborated with local organizations in preparing this 10-day event. The government budget was heavy with a whopping MOP3.6 million (US$450,000) allocated in the project, indicative of the measures to support the NAPE district to cope with the economic shifts caused by the shutdown of casinos.
Strong Visitor Attendance Despite Moderate Spending
Throughout the first four days, the event hosted approximately 36,000 visitors, with an average of about 9,100 visitors daily. Although welcome visitor figures, average spend per head was low at only MOP 5.55 (approximately US$0.69). This suggests room for improvement in converting foot traffic into serious revenue, but nonetheless marks early-stage success in getting people back to a section of Macau grappling with recent change.
Ripple Effects Beyond the Market Stalls
The advantages of the market reach beyond the stalls found along the streets of NAPE. Some of the vendors in the surrounding neighborhood, not part of the actual event, have shown heightened business due to the increased foot traffic. MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes pointed out that the market is not only about assisting those directly engaged, but also to revitalize the whole district with fresh ideas and new products.
Some participants in the NAPE market have reported exceptional daily sales of over MOP 10,000 (some US$1,250). Such encouraging figures are an indicator of the potential for the event to become a fixture that assists in stimulating and diversifying the local economy in the long run.
Wider Economic Benefits
Although not all local vendors were invited to directly participate in the market, MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said increased traffic benefits the wider neighborhood as a whole. She said the effect of the market is more than just the individual stalls, but also beyond businesses around the stalls to inject new life and creativity into the area.
The initiative has the dual purpose of maintaining current businesses and adding new products and innovation for tourists, making the local economy’s attraction more diversified.
