The operators of Macau’s casinos are still adjusting their approach to baccarat side bets, says gaming scholar Ryan Ho Hong Wai from the Centre for Gaming and Tourism Studies at Macao Polytechnic University. Though these have become increasingly popular since 2024, especially with the implementation of smart table technology, finding the right mix is an evolving issue for the city’s gaming houses.
The Rise of Smart Table Technology and Side Bets
Baccarat side bets have become an industry favourite for their ability to enhance house edge margins significantly. Ho explained that smart table technology has positioned Macau casinos at the forefront of gaming innovation, allowing staff to manage the more intricate payout structures associated with complex side bets. These systems automatically calculate both actual and theoretical hold rates, providing operators with real-time performance data.
The success story extends beyond Macau. At Las Vegas Sands’ Marina Bay Sands property in Singapore, smart table implementation has shown impressive results. The theoretical hold rate on baccarat rolling chip tables increased from 3.5 percent in the third quarter of 2024 to 4.2 percent by the third quarter, demonstrating the real revenue effect from these innovations.
An Ever-Changing Landscape
Side bets such as “Lucky 6” and “Lucky 7” have rapidly gained traction across gaming floors. Lucky 6 was first introduced in May 2024 during the Labour Day holiday period, while Lucky 7 and its Super Lucky 7 variant followed during China’s National Day celebrations in October. These additions carry theoretical house edges that generally fall in the mid-teens and can exceed 18 percent in certain formats. The new games boast a theoretical house edge of between mid-teens percentage points up to more than 18 percent in certain variants.
However, Ho emphasizes that the optimal array of wager choices remains fluid. Operators continue experimenting, introducing new bets regularly and removing those that fail to gain traction. Las Vegas Sands’ approach exemplifies this flexibility; the company describes maintaining a “supermarket” of baccarat side bet options, constantly testing new propositions while retiring underperforming ones.
The Complexity Challenge
Macau’s current direction toward what Ho terms “sicbo-isation” of baccarat, mirroring the diverse wagering options found on traditional sic bo tables, represents positive progression for player experience. But this growing sophistication brings its risks. Ho warns that too many betting options could overwhelm customers and dilute the timeless appeal of baccarat; innovation must be balanced with simplicity in game performance.
Drawing from Singapore’s playbook, some new variants such as “Immortal Dragon Tiger Baccarat” have already materialized at the Marina Bay Sands following regulatory approval. This particular bet wins when the player’s hand loses with a seven-point total, paying 25 to 1. Industry observers suggest such innovations will likely migrate to Macau properties.
Contextual Success Depends on Property Strategy
Ho notes that side bets’ effectiveness varies significantly across Macau’s casino landscape. Success hinges on individual property characteristics, particularly their unique customer base demographics and market positioning. What works for one venue may not resonate equally at another property catering to different player segments.
Navigating Future Innovation
As Macau’s gaming sector continues to evolve its baccarat product, the task of finding the right balance is not yet over. This demands serious reflection on players’ preferences, legislative frameworks, and revenue optimization, all while preserving the very essence of the game, which has made baccarat Macau’s signature gaming experience for decades.
