Macau’s tourism industry remains to be stable, with the latest data stating a distinct surge in tourists in May. The statistics released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated 3,372,081 tourists came to the city in the month of May, up by 25.3% year-on-year. The statistics are a reminder that the appeal of Macau as a destination remains very much alive even though the city keeps adapting to post-pandemic realities.
Same-Day Visitors Fuel the Boom
Diving into the details, it’s day-trippers who are leading much of the growth. Nearly two million people—1,992,296 to be exact—came to Macau for one day alone, up 39.2% compared with the same day last year. Overnight tourists also increased but at a less jaw-dropping pace, rising 9.4% to 1,379,785.
The same-day visitor flow has had a tangible impact on the length of stay, which declined slightly by 0.1 day to 1.1 days overall. The DSEC attributed the decline based on the larger proportion of visitors opting for short visits. Overnight visitors’ average length stayed put at 2.3 days, but same-day visitors typically spent just 0.2 day in the city.
Mainland China Remains Number One Source
The mainland of China is Macau’s greatest source of tourists, and the current statistics verify the trend. 2,439,936 tourists arrived from the mainland alone in the month of May, a 31.4% surge year on year. The Individual Visit Scheme remains the talk of the town, with 1,309,168 tourists arriving through the scheme—a 46.5% surge compared to the previous year. Under this category, large quantities entered under the “one trip per week measure,” “multiple-entry measure,” and “tourist group multi-entry measure” show a variety of travel patterns that have been fueling Macau’s boom in tourism.
The Greater Bay Area, and more importantly the nine Pearl River Delta cities, were also major contributors to the surge. Visitor arrivals from this part of the world increased by 42.5%, with Zhuhai recording a 66.1% increase on its own. These statistics underscore increased integration among Macau and the surrounding cities, and ease and appeal of cross-border travel.
Regional and International Arrivals Show Steady Growth
Macau is not only attracting mainland China visitors. Inbound tourists from Hong Kong increased to 621,106, or a 6.7% year-on-year growth, and Taiwanese tourists increased 14.3% to 78,828. Overseas visitors are also increasing, with 232,211 overseas visitors in May, which were up by 25.6% year on year.
These rises indicate that Macau’s initiative to diversify its tourist source is paying dividends while the city continues to depend greatly on its foundation markets. Regional and overseas visitor arrivals continue to show another string of strength for Macau’s tourism.
A Promising Path Ahead for Macau
With tourists arriving in increasing numbers and the tourism infrastructure of the city continuing to develop, Macau is set for a robust summer. Keeping this going, however, will be the issue in the future, as the battle to bring in tourists heats up regionwide. For now, the numbers are all the evidence anyone should need: Macau is back on the map, and tourists are responding in droves.
