May 2025 brought impressive statistics that indicate Macau’s hospitality business is getting its groove back. Hotels throughout the city averaged an occupancy rate of 87.8%, a good 4.5% point increase over the same month last year. For a sector that’s been struggling to get back on its feet, these are tangible improvements.
What makes the numbers here so interesting is how they break down by hotel class. The five-star hotels truly shone, reaching 91.4% occupancy. That’s not only the highest percentage of all hotel classes, it’s also an impressive 6.5% point gain over May 2024.
Mainland Chinese Visitors Power the Numbers
The numbers of visitors speak a tale that anyone who knows Macau’s tourism trends would be familiar with. Among the 1.23 million hotel stayers for May, some 902,000 were from mainland China. That represents a year-over-year increase of 3.7%, and it shows how massive this portion of the market remains for Macau’s hotel sector.
Arrivals of international tourists also showed positive figures at around 100,000 tourists, an increase of 12.9% compared to last year. The biggest group of foreign visitors came from South Korea with around 27,000 individuals, up 19.2%.Such double-digit growth in foreign tours indicates that Macau is effectively drawing tourists from outside its historic markets.
The length of stay was constant at 1.6 nights, which is interesting to see because it shows that there is continuity to the pattern of behavior among visitors. They’re not merely transiting through, they’re staying long enough to actually enjoy what the city has in store.
Infrastructure Changes Behind the Scenes
Though the occupancy rates were the ones making the headlines, there were some intriguing developments going on with the hotel infrastructure itself. Macau had 147 hotel establishments that offered accommodation services during May, which is four more than last year at the same time.
But the overall number of rooms available actually fell 3.7% to 45,000. That may seem contradictory when you are being told about more hotel properties, but it likely would be due to altered room arrangements or temporary closures for rehab. When occupancy levels are rising with fewer available rooms, it means real demand growth and not merely mathematical gains.
Seeing the Larger Picture
The five-month average hotel occupancy level in January-May hit 89.2%, a five-percentage-point jump from the same five months in 2024. That sort of steady rise is proof of structural shifts rather than transient fluctuations.
Interestingly, as occupancy levels climbed, actual occupancy within the five-month period fell 2.1% to 6.0 million. This seeming contradiction is explained by the fact that fewer rooms available can still register higher occupancy rates with ever-so-slightly fewer overall guests. The length of stay for this extended period averaged 1.7 nights.
Tour Groups Have Mixed Results
The tour group visitors numbered 855,000 for the first half of the year, a modest 0.7% rise. But if you look deeper into the figures, some interesting trends appear.
International group tours are surging, up 12.4% to 99,000 travelers. South Korean group tours were particularly good, up 24.2% to 46,000 travelers. Mainland Chinese group tours, the biggest segment so far, fell 2.2% to 732,000 visitors.
This transition implies that though Macau is still attracting mainland Chinese visitors, the rises are more from free independent travelers rather than group tours. Simultaneously, international tour group expansion reflects that Macau is successfully projecting outward from traditional markets.
The overall image presented by these May numbers is one of an adapting and rebounding hotel industry. Improved occupancy levels, increasing numbers of international visitors, and consistent performance over several months all indicate a sector getting back on its feet. For Macau’s hospitality sector, these figures are more than mere statistics, they’re proof that the efforts of recent years are worth it.
