Macau ended the year 2025 with a strong finish for gaming taxes, which is a reflection of the importance of casino money for the city’s economy. The latest data show that the city’s gaming taxes collected MOP94.9 billion (US$11.8 billion) for FY25, up by 7.6% from the year before. These results are in line with a strong performance by the gaming industry, where gross gaming revenue grew to MOP247.4 billion (US$30.7 billion) for FY25, a year-over-year growth of 9.1%. The stronger casino results translated directly into higher duty collections for the government.
The significant point is that the final figure for gaming taxes collected by the Macau government for 2025 was not just higher than the year before, but it was also higher than the government’s own estimates. In the budget for FY25, the government’s estimate was MOP93.1 billion (US$11.6 billion) for revenue from gaming duty. Actual collections ended above that level, indicating that casino activity outperformed the assumptions built into the government’s financial planning. Gaming taxes remained the main source of revenue for the Macau government, despite the government’s desire for a diversified economy. In 2025, gaming taxes contributed 82.7% of the total tax revenue collected by the government, which was MOP114.6 billion (US$14.2 billion) for the year.
Early 2026 indicates a continuation of the heavy dependence on gaming revenues in the territory. Current figures show that the territory collected a total of MOP16.9 billion (US$2.1 billion) in gaming taxes in January and February combined. These revenues represent 18.3% of the total gaming duty budget of the government in 2026. The total gaming duty budget of the government in 2026 stands at MOP92.5 billion (US$11.5 billion). It should be noted that only a quarter of the year has passed, and the government coffers have accumulated almost a fifth of the total gaming revenues budgeted.
The gaming taxes remained the leading source of revenues for the public sector in early 2026. These taxes represented 90.7% of total revenues in January and February. These revenues are higher than those of the entire year of 2025, which stood at 82.7%. It should be noted that despite the intention of diversifying the revenues of the territory, the financial life of the territory remains closely associated with the performance of the gaming industry.
